Hello!
I usually bend my sides at around .110 then cut my binding channels at .090, leaving around .010 of the actually sides to glue the binding to. I have recently started a parlour, and bent the mahohany sides at .085. My question is, is it ok to cut .090 binding channels, effectively going all the way through the sides and into the kerfed lining, or is that taboo? There have been times where I have gone through the sides in sections where I have had to sand a lot of the sides to flatten them after bending, but can you do it all around both top and back?
Thoughts, anyone?

Traditional 'open kerf' linings? If so, don't use thin CA glue for the bindings... Actually any type of glue can make a mess if the binding rabbet cuts through into the kerfs of the linings, but CA can REALLY make things ugly (not easy to fix, either gaah).

So, as long as you don't use too much glue, you'll be OK.

What the others said:

I typically bend at .080 for an OM sized guitar and install binding that are .090 which will be slightly proud but easily scraped back into submission. When I cut the binding channel I expose the kerfs on my reversed kerfed linings on probably 50% of the rim.

Using Titebond applied with an artist's brush and Robbie's high-tech glue spreading device (my finger..... :D )(you will understand when you get one of Robbie's excellent building DVDs) I have never had enough Titebond penetrating the kerfed linings that it dripped or needed to be cleaned up. The excess glue partially fills the kerfs which I believe is the true long lost secret to Stradivarius's tone........ :D Just kidding of course........
