Im building an electric bass. The piece of ash im using has dark some weird dark looking grains. Kind of like a mix of brown, peach, purple like grains. I researched it online and i think its black ash. Does anyone know if this is a good piece of ash to be using? or does anyone know the sound characteristics of this piece?

That sure looks like Swamp ash .Is it light in weight? The stained boards usually are.
Swamp ash is an outstanding choice for a bass. [:Y:] You get tight lows and highs with a scooped mid response , good sustain ,good quick response. The light stuff is also pretty soft so be leery of over torquing and stripping out screw holes .The grain is very open and requires a light touch when sanding to avoid ripples in your contours.
I like the stain, it adds to the look for me.
Hope that helps,good luck
Brett
