I've been trying to locate a Snakewood fingerboard blank for a custom order. I've had a dozen or so sent from different vendors and all have had little to no figure or bad color or have even had long checks in them that made them unsuitable for fingerboard use. Some I've kept for use as rosettes or as binding, but most got sent back.

I need a single blank with reasonable figure. Not necessarily best or master grade as long as it has typical Snakewood markings and good color.

If anyone can steer me to a vendor or a vendor to me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Kevin Gallagher/Omega GuitarsKevin Gallagher38573.5857291667

The only place I've seen them is Gilmer woods. You might check with
Larry Davis over at gallery hardwoods. though...

Both Bob Cefalu and Brad Goodman who hang out here have had some very nice snakewood fretboards in the past. They may still have some. I think.

Hi Kevin,
The problem is that when us wood guys buy a snakewood log the chance of getting a decent quality fretboard blank is very slim because of cracks, knots, low figure, etc.,etc.,etc.
The last one I had was a good one,but it's all gone now.
The other problem is that when you do get a log,it is very wet,so the stuff has to sit around for a long time before I can sell it.
Whoever you get it from be really careful to wait and make sure it is well "seasoned".
I made an archtop neck with a snakewwod fretboard and front and back head veneers out of material that I would swear was dry which all cracked on me- so be careful.

Kevin I'm sold out too. Last log I looked at was checked so bad I didn't buy it. I agree with Brad on snakewood logs.

Kevin,

Are ya stuck on snake wood? There are some nice striped ebony pieces around also. I have a couple that I could show to you (via pictures, the drive's much too far!). And I am sure others on this forum would have some also. No one's going to retire on selling a single fret board but it would sure be nice if any of us could help you out in ensuring that you get the type 'character' you want for this special instrument.

Shane

Kevin,
I would suggest doing a search on Ebay for Snakewood. I bought a fretboard on ebay that is absolutely beautiful and no checking. I paid $42 for it. I thought that was a good deal. If I had several of them, I would be willing to part with one, but I only have one, sorry. Good luck!
