My customer asked that I set his guitar up for Mediums, and to use the Tony Rice strings.
I had never heard of these strings let alone used them.
Last night I strung it up and my first impressions is that the guitar (LS Redwood/Indian) E2 now has a bark that it never had, I mean this thing sounds great! It has a nice jangly sound as well, it really changed the complexion of this guitar completely.

I saw him play once with Peter Rowan,and Vassar Clemmens-what a show!!
If he endorses those strings -they must be good.

Lots of grassers love'em, if for no other reason than hero worship. They're made by D'Aquisto, and the gauges are the traditional bluegrass sets, the B and E a little light. Also, they're supposed to be nickel wound and not bronze/brass wound...which is supposed to make a difference in the attack.    I've played a few sets, but never saw a staggering difference.

The only "real" knock I hear about them is that they die in a day or two of medium playing...which, for Tony equates to about 2 sets. If you can afford to change that much, and you don't mind the bad string squeak, they are supposed to be a good option to coloring your tone. My .02.

John loves them and asked for them specifically, its what hes uses. He's pretty good friends with Tony, so not doubt thats where he learned about them.

It certainly gave that E2 a bluegrass feel!

JJ, this is the first set of med's I have used. So I cant comment on how they sound compared to a set of Martin Meds for example. I have only used lights.
Ill be looking into some of the other types, matter of fact I just got my batch of strings from Paul and there are some med's in it. One thing for sure, they sure do drive that top! Im liking it!

...And what, if anything, do you do to set it up for mediums as opposed to lights? Bracing, action, etc?

I had to cut a new nut - wider slots, thats all.
Im still dialing in the action.

On my guitars if someone wanted to use Mediums I'd have to brace a little heavier. I build light.

Why don't you take this opportunity to shoot some pictures our way and explain your process of the neck set up and action set up, with this new guitar you mentioned.
I'm sure we would all be interested.

For example: How well do you examine the straightness or lack of, before gluing the neck to the body?
How would you correct a slight twist in the neck before gluing?

Answer...........?

For those who want to try these nickel wound strings, but can't find the TR strings, D'Addario J-22 are pretty well the same(I like 'em a tad better), with a .056" on the bottom instead of a .058"
Available in light gauge for those of you who like lights(yuk...<bg>).

As for them dying off quickly, well, that is what they are meant to do. Don't expect a bright, jangly, metalic tone; instead, they let you hear the wood as it was meant to be heard. These are for players who like the tone of old strings, yet still need the intonation of fresh ones.
