From what I can find on buffing wheels, there are several materials that they are made of and basically 2 different styles. Here is a pictue of the 2 styles:



I use the style that is not sewn together and are several sheets of fabric (looks like undyed denim). I use 3 of these disks on each side of my buffing arbor, held together with the nuts and spanner washers.

I have been wondering about the other style, which looks like the same material, but the sheets of fabric are sewn together until the last couple of inches or less of the diameter of the wheel.

Which is better for buffing out Nitro and which is better for Polyester? For that matter why ar there 2 different styles and the purpose of each? Anybody know? Which do you use and why?

I use 12", 16 ply canton cotton weave. 3 wheels per side it provides a nice soft nap, but the weave still gives it enough rigidity. i had issues (probably related to user error) with denim. and I have never used tight sewn on any thing other than metals.

In short Ken, the wheels that are sewn together are designed for aggressive cutting and the loose ones are good for fine finishing. Here is a site that has a lot of info: http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/

I bought their buffing kit and it works great. http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/wood_pol.html It comes with the acrylic buffing wheels which are designed for buffing acrylic, lacquers, and varnishes.

I have/do the same as Michael. Never used anything else on guitars.
