I am currently building a Parlour guitar for a recording musician by the name of Dan Walsh. Killer player. He is a fan of the Fishman sound hole mounted rare earth humbucker pickup. Apparently Fishman no longer makes them, or have changed the way they are made. Does anybody have a line on where a guy might find one?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
David

What's the problem with the redesigned model? I've noticed no discernible change in quality between the old ones and new ones.

It's all in the perception of the player I suppose. He has used the new ones and just prefers the older models. I have not personally used them, but Dan know what he wants, and I am going to my best to give him what he wants.

I have one that my friend was using on her guitar. I installed a K&K in hers and she would like to sell this pickup. The end pin was never installed so it still has the long cord attached. Let me know if you're interested.
There are a couple on Ebay, but it's hard to tell if they are the redesigned ones.

Thanks Everyone!
I will check ebay out as well.

Kent...how much will your friend want for the pickup? I will need to speak with Dan, as he is supplying all of the parts(Tuners, Strings etc) from his endorsement deals from D'Addario and Planet Wave etc.

Cheers
Davdi

hi David
here’s a link to Mike Vanden’s site.
Mike developed, designed and marketed the original pickup named Mimesis which Fishman bought the rights to. Many who have these pickups say they are superior to the mass produces units including Tony McManus, it might be worthwhile contacting Mike as he still makes the original pickups, your guitar playing friend is right, they have been changed - here's a quote.
“FISHMAN RARE EARTHS UPDATED.
RE-VOICED, NEW SHAPE AND MOUNTING SYSTEM
The Fishman Rare Earth series of magnetic soundhole pickups have been updated. They've been re-voiced to feature a warmer Bass, a Mid-Cut, and a brighter sparkling treble response.
The case shape has been altered to enhance the looks when mounted in the guitar soundhole, and the clamping mounts are much more positive.
I have to say that Fishman have done a great job. The sound of these new Rare Earths is as close as you can get to the original Mimesis pickups.
The pre amp and battery arrangement stays the same.
For more info go to www.fishman.com or your nearest Fishman stockist. “

Thanks Geordie
I have passed that link on to Dan. He thinks he may have an extra Fishman that he can take from another guitar. This may pique his interest.

I asked him about the LR Baggs M1, and he poo poo'ed that idea as well. He is very particular about what he likes and what he doesn't. And when you have been playing and recording as long as he has, I suppose he has earned that right.

What may end up happening is that I will just drill the end pin hole, and he can have what ever he wants installed when he gets it. It would just be nice to deliver the guitar complete and ready to go.
