So in the box of luthier tools and parts I got from my dad a few months ago, was several (maybe 5) pounds of glue crystals along with the glue pot we used 25 or 30 years ago. I have been considering going back to using hot glue for some of the steps in building the archtops I am working on. Is there a shelf life for the crystals themselves that have not been used or is it only after they have been mixed with water that they have a shelf life?

The glue pot is a beautifull vintage version from the 50's/60's I would guess. Its lined with copper I believe. We used to use the glue right in the pot itself, but that was a bear to keep clean. Any reason I can't float a jar in this pot instead?

I realize that if I could go buy some new fangled babyfood warmer or simular to heat the glue, but I would like to use this old glue pot if I can....for monetary as well as sentimental reasons.

I hear the life of hide glue in crystalline form is indefinite if it is kept dry and cool. Some people buy it in drums, it's so cheap that way. Also, no reason you can't use the glue pot with some water and put the glue in plastic or glass bottles or jars. I'd get a meat thermometer to make sure the temp is reasonable.

Yep it's indefinite so long as no one comes along and eats it........

This is yet another advantage of HHG in as much as Titebond, LMI White, CA, and even epoxy all have shelf life.

I keep my granules refrigerated in a ziplock plastic bag. It has a half-life of forever.
