I've got Cumpiano and Kinkead. Any other suggestions for a new guy?

Snap I've now gone the Mayes DVD way and would recommend all his DVDs especially voicing series I'm dissappointed with the Siminoff tap tuning book but I guess it's just not the way I work. I've also read some internet reports and would recommend Dana Bourgeois of Pantheon Guitars articles http://www.pantheonguitars.com/

I'd also like recommendations to point me in the right directions to guys

I think you are set wrt books. I echo getting the DVD's from Robbie O'Brien and John Mayes. I like Robbie's cause it is 1 DVD that goes through a build in sequence. I like John's (I have all of them) because as a beginner, John goes into detail for each step. I have learned a tremendous amt from these DVD's (and of course this forum!).

I'm thinking of buying trade secrets 1 & 2 from stewmac and their finishing book Guitar Finishing Step-By-Step and wondered if anyone owns these and their opinion of them.

Chris, Todd was kind enough to give all his knowledge (or an aweful lot of it any) away for free here on the OLF and the MIMF as you know. Todd, a book would have made you more $$ But thanks for taking the time to post what you do.

As far as the books go, I don't think you need any others. Really those two are out dated anyway and there are many more efficient methods to building than what is presented in most of the books that are still in print.

Each of the DVD's of Robert O'Brien and John Mayes offer more up to date technics, and John is just one crazy guy to boot, you'll do as much laughing as you will learning, which will be a heck of a lot.

already got dans repair book as that's what's led me to the path of building my own really, though did most repairs before I owned the book with the help of a luthier over the phone, and he's just bought trade secrets 1 & 2 and recommended them

Will add the fretting books now.

I was glad I got the "finishing step-by-step" book. It covers a lot particularly for the newbee, as I'm (or at least was) plus a variety of "do this ..." recipes for recreating classic finishes. (It reads like an overstuffed promotion for colortone at times, but you'll get over it.) I also liked the "sunburst" video, both for mixing blends and shooting finish.

An OLF Wiki would be a great idea, that way the tutorial or method could be there without all the comments which follow. Sometimes those are great but often other ideas can get lost in the shuffle.

Also the Wiki would provide a systematic approach to finding things as well it could be sequential for building.
