So this is the most absent minded thing I have done so far in lutherie... I forgot to put a reinforcement strip on the back. I have been building arched braceless backs for a while now (which require no reinforcement) and got accustomed to not using them. So when I built a solid backed guitar I left this detail out [headinwall]. I am wondering if anyone builds without a reinforcement strip? I know it is definitely insurance, but is it absolutely necessary? BTW, there is no decorative center strip between the halves.

A strip is not normally used in the top plate construction, so I don't imagine that it's an absolute must for the back plate if your joint is perfect, although I believe it does offer some insurance from a back opening up along the joint because of a blow to the back through dropping, etc.

You could add the reinforcement strip after the fact, that is through the soundhole, at least for the sections that are reachable.

Matt,
I actually own a guitar from a local builder here and it is # 268. This guitar has no back strip or center strip. It is about 7 years old, and has no problems with the seam coming apart. I wouldn't worry about it.

A center stripe is why backs need reinforcing and tops don't. A good glue joint should be as strong as solid wood.

I agree; no decorative back center stripe, no reinforcement necessary. You should be OK.

Very good points and very much appreciated...I was not looking forward to putting the strip in after the box has been closed up. I am going to let it be and hope for the best. I really think it will be fine, but I wanted to make sure others agreed. Your responses are very consoling bliss . Thanks again.
