Tony, I can't say that I use hold fast but a thought sort of came to me regarding planning thin wood. What about using vacuum to hold the piece on the bench? No clamps, dogs or other items to get in the way while planning.

Paint sticks screwed in with nylon screws, on rubber kitchen mat thing you get at walmart.(I think its for silverware or something.) The rubber matt almost holds the tops etc, then just need the top from moving, you can clamp paint sticks so they don't allow you to push it when planning the ends.

Two words: Vacuum clamping.

I third that. If it's made of wood then I rarely use any other kind. With the exception of laminating necks and joining tops, all other processes are vacuum clamped to either my machine table or my work bench. Someday I'll get around to making 'the ultimate workbench' with an integral vacuum grid...

Rubber Router anti skid Pads are what your looking for. Lee valley has them, but kitchen mats at Wallmart are the same stuff. Very simple.
