 Post subject: Balsa wood for bracing?

I was at the local Hobby Lobby store last week and noticed they sold various lengths and widths of Balsa wood.

Anyone ever consider using this for bracing? It would cut down on the weight but might not be strong enough.

Chuck, Balsa has a very low shear strength, I would be leery of it on a steel string for sure. You could however use it on end and cap the top of the braces, similar to a cored panel.

Balsa is used in some classicals to support carbon/expoxy strips for bracing.

Spruce has one of the best weight to strength ratios. Used in aircraft for this same reason. Remember the "spruce goose"? HUge wooden airplane.

Aren't those CF/Balsa Lattice guitars done with endgrain balsa? Or am I confusing balsa core wings for model aircraft here?
