has anyone tried the roto-zip circle cutter attachment for cutting sound hole and rosettes? thanks Jody

I was going to ask if anyone uses this for binding router, as you can get a 5/16 binding bit at stewi mac for like $20.00 with bearing.


I think the issue I had when I looked at it was it did not cut small enough, or was too wobbley, I ferget...

I have had one for a long time and it's quite useful for meatball projects like cutting holes in sheetrock and large tolerance woodworking. I wouldn't let it anywhere near a guitar. Others may differ.

I bought one years ago when they first came out and used it about 3 times and I don't know where it is today but it must be around somewhere.
I'd say put your money into something good like maybe a Colt and make a Wells/ Karol base for it and a binding machine.

Is that the single speed?

Actually I have a Roto-zip RZ-10 (Bosch) with all the attachments, including plunge base and wand, I use it for saddle slots and have used it for many other guitar related routing duties, they have more power than a dremel and I have the remote wand for it too. If you have the adjustable chuck for it you can use any type of bit made. (which I have). So they are decent and easy to use, not as ergonomic as my lam. router or smaller dremels but it does have a specific tool duty in my shop. Plus I got the entire set up as a promotional deal at a local supply house. Bonus!
They're not too bad for some things.

well, I already have my binding rig set -up, maybe I will just go with the fly cutter and drill press for the rosettes,i just thought since i have both the older roto zip and the newer ( bosch) and they do have some nuts for a small motor, that $20.00 for the circle cutter attachment was reasonable , if it worked . ... thanks for the input... Jody

Mario posted some time back that if I have this correctly..... he has good results using roto-zip piloted bits with a router table to cut the excess off the plates once attached. Again, if I am remembering this correctly he leaves over 1/2" of over hang so the bit can slice through the excess plate and you end up with a pretty flush cut.

I don't think he was/is using the roto-zip - just the piloted bits.

Correct on Mario and the piloted bits, Hesh. I haven't used them yet, but was looking at a pack at HD the other day and almost got 'em. Don't know why I didn't? I need to remember to pick 'em up next time. Real cheap, too!

They are $98 at my Lowes. Saw them yesterday. I'd probably bought it if it was $70, don't know why though, I have 2 new PC310's in their boxes.

Chris I'll buy one of those PC 310's off you if you don't need it...

Oh I got plans for them on a binding machine and plunge router base. I got them from Amazon if you are looking for one at $169.
