Well in the years that I've cut wood, I'd never thought it would happen to little ole' me. Last
week I managed to filet the side of my
index finger with a carbide tipped Lennox
saw blade. I was cutting Brazilian rosewood bridge blanks, which I've done 1000 times, and
for some reason had something else on my
mind. I knew something wasn't right because
towards the end of the rosewood piece it
cut really easily....and quickly. So I
looked down and realized I had done a major
NO-NO.

The only good thing--I severed the nerve
on the right side of my index finger. Why was
this good? Because I couldn't feel
anything as I scrubed the rosewood dust
out of the wound.

My wife's a physician and she looked at my finger
and said I needed 5-6 stitches. Of course being male and hard headed I said no way, I've got wood to cut.
So out came the Durmabond (medical CA glue)and I
was as good as new. Except now it's difficult to pick my nose.....hey I gotta poke fun at my own mishap.
I took pictures of my finger just for you all
but thought I'd really gross some folks out.

I'll show my ring finger (alomost degloved) if you show yours!

BTW this would be a good lesson for us. Nothing like a (graphic) testimony to drive home a point. (no, I'm not a gore freak...)

I hope you haven't lost anything from your injury-that's frightening to think about.Terry Stowell38601.843587963

Ummmmmmmm... how do I say this gently...

NO!

The last thing I want to look at is grizzly injury pictures, let's not start sharing THAT kind of photography around here...

Steve the important thing is your O.K. I cut my finger on the band saw a few weeks ago, I have a very nice blade on and I thought it had stopped moving (it was making NO noise at all), I had walked away and came back and reached for the piece and it got me. Not as bad as yours but I watch that dang blade now

Cheers

Yes Steve...Pictures, and get one of those shop lights for good illumination. Pick out a simple background.

By the way, the wood is good. (of course) Thanks for the fine selection.

Why is it when someone tells a story like that, I get these shooting pains that go from my left hand down through my feet???? Oh, because I nearly lost two fingers too. Ouch. I feel your pain.

Steve, Did the same thing. Same finger, same result , only I was fortunate enough to pull back in time and only ran the kerf about 1/8" into the center. Like you, went right back to cutting after seeing the medic. Just goes to show that it only takes a split second to renew the respect that a saw deserves!
I`ll be fine, but boy, my nose needs a good pickin, too.
Isn`t there a saying something like "I`ll pick your nose if you`ll pick mine"?

Pictures are a good thing. It helps us all remember to be careful, not forget what we are doing!
If you don't want to see the pics, then don't look!
I hope it gets better soon, Stephen!

Steve...A perfect opportunity for inlay! I'd suggest a red-ish tint...

Steve,

you have the best of both worlds. With your wife being a doctor she can patch you up when you have mishaps and she probably makes enough money which allows you to be able to build guitars and have mishaps in the first place!
be careful man!

Steve, Thanks for the reminder. I can still count to 9-31/32, and your story made my fingertip ache again. Just like an actor getting butterflies in the gut before walking on stage, we all need to have a healthy dose of fear of carbide in motion, scalpel sharp edges, and any moving parts on tools that can grab clothing, hair, or appendages.

Hope you heal quickly, and never forget.

Dennis

Steve, hope you feel better soon. Sorry to hear of your bite. But, selfishly, glad that someone could share this kind of news as it makes me remember what moving carbide can do. And I DO need a reminder every now and then.
I remember Charles Fox once caught a kid doing something stupid on the bandsaw. He said, "though a bandsaw seems very safe compared to other tools, remember that in meat lockers, this is the saw they use to cut flesh, muscle and bone." That sort of stuck with me.

I still get a cold sweat when working with it.
Safety never takes a vacation, so they say.
Glad to hear your ok Steve.
I also work with a lathe and could wip up one heck of a nose picker for you if you'd like?
Your choise of hardwood.

Steve I'm sorry to hear that. That's one of my constant fears when bandsawing. Here's wishing you a speedy and complete recovery.

Hey Steve,

Hope you get better soon. It is good advise to keep up your concentration when on the tools but sometimes life gets in the way! I also have a few saw marks in the biking gloves I use when pushing spruce blocks through my saw. I thought that was better option than risking my hands!

Take good care

Shane
