It is incredible wood, I have never seen any like it before, good news is the guy who got it for me has about 200 Cubic metres of it, Below is a picture of the end grain.

That's so purty! I love the look. The plane wood looks anything but plain.

Beautiful guitar and excellent workmanship but can I confess... What is London Plane? Looks like Sycamore but I wouldn't want to presume. BTW, had you said London Broil... well, now, that's a different matter entirely!

I discussed this with Colin S, who is extremely knowlegable in general, and on wodd species this is the summary he gave me.

London plane is Platanus X hispanica, a natural cross-genus hybrid of the Oriental Plane, P. orientalis and the American Plane, P. occidentalis. The family they come from is the Platanaceae. All of the maples including our sycamore are from the family Aceraceae, so the two are not related except at the level of Order. It has also been known in the past as P.acerifolia which simply means Platanus with maple shaped leaves

I had been told in the past that it was related to Sycamore, but it isn't actualy from the same species.

Beautiful, Russell, and I'm glad to see this particular look. The one I'm building is cherry with ebony binding, heelcap, fretboard, bridge, and peghead. I thought the contrast might be too much but it will be close in color to yours and it looks great on yours.

Russell, great guitar, as usual. That's the one I told you to send to Penny, to save me having to build hers, so what's it doing going up to Scotland?

Love the work and the overall look. The Plane is wonderful - I'll E-mail you about Penny's set soon. I like the pear wood on the fingerboard, it's a great wood isn't it, I used that on a lute. I also like the look of the finish lets the wood look like wood.

Who's got the Cedar, is it Andy? No, I mustn't I've got enough wood already,(did I really say that?) and Andy's already got a pile of B&S and neck wood waiting for me.

By the way folks, in Europe this is the wood we call Lacewood, just shows you have to be very careful with common names.

Beautiful guitar Russell. I really like the combination of wood and bindings. Very nicely executed. I believe the wood is related to our American Sycamore not to be confused with European Sycamore which would be like our maple. In took about 3 weeks, but was built along side some others. I tend to build in runs of 3/4 at the beggining and then once the bodies etc are built, finish them individually, I can't cope with trying to do multiple fret jobs, setups etc. Just me I find I need to concentrate on them individually at than stage.

Being left handed makes it a little easier to part with them as I can't play them anyway, but my Daughter who test pilots the Right Handed ones, did not want to let this one go, it has a lot of attitude for a little guitar, the customer wanted it built light, as he normally plays lowdens, and this one is as light as I would dare. The wood on the headplate is London Plane the same as back and sides.

That looks like the plane to me you have there, It is nice wood, I find the tap tone is not that impresive but the finished articles sound really good.

Bob, that's right, the closest relative you have to London Plane is what you call Sycamore, in fact, as Russell said, your Sycamore, Platanus occidentalis (Western Platanus) is one of the parents of London Plane a natural cross with the European Plane, P. orientalis (Eastern Platanus) that was discovered in Spain (thus Platanus X Hispanica). It was planted a lot in Victorian towns in Britain because of it's legendary ability to survive the most foul smoke filled environments.

Beautiful guitar! Love that sycamore what ever we call it. And the neck is exceptional! I love the small guitars! I`ve got a nice sycamore reso I finished a month or so ago, pics on the puter and all but I`ve given up on trying to post them. I just can`t figure out how to get them from computer to website! I have a HP camera I purchased and the software that comes with it. If anyone out there knows how to do this drop an E. I`d appreciate it!
