I thought I would try my hand at some inlay artistry.
It was not easy since I didn't have all the tools needed.
Anyways, it came out OK.

That looks very cool. Did you cut the bird out yourself? And what kind of machine heads are those? Keep up the good work.

Yes I did. That was the hard part. I broke a few pcs of pearl. The pearl that size was expensive.

Don't fret it Walter when I first started cutting pearl I broke a few myself. Blade angle, down stroke cutting, and patients make the diff. I always try to get myself in a trance like state. Not being aware of things around you helps keep focus on the pearl. Most breaks are caused by forcing the saw. A well lubed and sharp blade will make the diff.

That looks great walter.

You'll come to find if you keep this up, that breaking pieces gets less and less. It's losing the tiny ones to the inlay gods just after they are almost fully cut that gets frustrating! That, and making engraving mistakes... THAT is absolutely no fun at all!

Walter - sounds like you are ready for that inlay I sent you. Really nice job on this. Did you draw the bird freehand, or did you use some artwork for the outline? I have tried for some time now to do an eagle but maybe too ambitious for my patience level.

I know you are kidding.. but I will tell you that pearl/abalone dust really screws me up. I have to wear a full respirator when I cut that.

I am coughing like a 20 year smoker if I am not careful when cutting or sanding pearl.

Great job. I have found when cutting out detailed stuff like my logo that it really helps to glue some paper to the back of the pearl first. I usually use old business cards about 2 thick on the back of the shell. Glue them on with CA. You are less likely to break a piece this way (less, is the key word). Then you throw the piece in some acetone and the paper comes off after a few minutes.

Very nice Walter! I'll bet it looks even better in person as photos rarely do inlay justice.

Since this is my first "miniture" inlay, I thought I would post a pic as well. This was difficult to cut, a small crack in the left hand piece but not to noticable. And just a little rough around the outside curve, on the same piece.

The owner wanted to have his initials or signature on the fretboard, so this is what he's getting, which is his signature.
