Wow! Just noticed this new forum. Glad it is here. Been wanting to ask this: those curly body sections near the neck joint, is that a carved solid piece? How do you finish in the tight spaces? I favor harp guitars, some like the Gibson feature tight body spirals and I was wonder how this was done ( and finished).

Hey Mike!

I just got some Mando books today and the curly bits seem to all be solid. Looks like the curl and neck are a single block.

One of the books has a picture of a Knutsen harp-mandolin. Maybe that should be your next project.

Mike

For the mandolin scrolls, I brush a coupla coats of varnish in the slot and after that whatever gets in there from spraying is it. I sand once with small sticks with 120 stuck to them before finishing, and leave it after that.

Welcome to the forum Mike.

Regarding finishing in tight spaces....me use crayons. Been using them since me was a kid...work great.
