Well, a few hours ago, the UPS man dropped this at my door....






Now, let the fun begin!!!

I can't believe how quiet a VFD spindle is compared to a router! At full RPM's, considerably less noise...I should have taken the plunge a long time ago....now to mount it on my router, and wire up mach3 to control it, and we would be all set!

I always had my eye on one, and this time finally decided to take the plunge...

I have been doing some tests with it with the VFD drive, and I can't believe how quiet and smooth this thing is!
VERY little run out as well, from what I can measure, but I will need to do some more measurements when I get it mount it.

The unit in a "teknomotor"....they are made in Italy, and you can get some info on their site:

The drive is a delta, which is very popular, and have great support if you need them.

Kevin is a good guy, and he gave me a great price, wired the whole thing up for me, threw in a couple of free collets (r20) and included 15ft of shielded cable....could not ask for more!

It is a 1.6KW unit (translates to about 2.2HP), which for my purposes, is more than enough to cut anything I might dream off!

The dollar against the Euro is great right now, and it was about $1,500 for the whole package when done.....

Did you consider the less expensive Chinese spindles? They seem to be going for about 1/3 of that on eBay now. I know the old adage is you get what you pay for but I was just curious what you learned doing your research and if you considered the less expensive alternatives?

I have to say I was a bit skeptical on the ones on Ebay. I have read however that a couple of folks have got them, and they seem to work OK. My reasoning for going with this is along these lines:

-The ones on Ebay are water-cooled, and I was not up to the whole water pump, tank etc mess. I have a small shop, and I needed to keep things simple for now.

-Support: Where do you go if you have a problem?

-Community: How many others are using them?

Hence, I arrived at what I got...and yes, you are right, you get what you pay for. This thing has almost no run-out and whisper is quiet...I could not ask for anything more, and glad I got it.

cyborgcnc, do you know if they have an atc spindle kit? Something an er25 collet size?

I looked on the link you posted earlier but did not see one.

I have found a 5 hp Colombo kit for about $6500....but man that makes me shiver!

This is a new ATC concept on the market.
It utilizes a conventional brushed router motor for the power only.
I believe that a VFD spindle can be adapted as well.

I have not seen an ATC one, and I do not think damencnc (where I got mine) sells an ATC kit. I would also look closer at their site (teknomotor.com) to see if they offer one. They also offer links to their distributors etc.

I know an ATC kit would surely be nice, but the cost (and complexity) goes up considerably...

Have you looked at the tormach tooling system?

Very close to an ATC, at considerably less....just get the right spindle that has the right collet, measure your tools beforehand in the holder, and voila!

The littlemachineshop.com also sells it, and you can get some details there....

Might be a compromise, but reading over some folks you use it at the cnc zone, they love it!

I called them this morning and had a good visit with a fellow by the name of Alex. This is an atc spindle less motor but can be made to adapt to many different hand held router motors and the Chinese water cooled spindle as well.

My concern was weight but Alex told me that would not be a problem and then the overall length concerned me and he put that to rest as well. One of the Avenger spindles attached to the Chinese motor has an overall lenght of just less that 14 in.

Now I have to figure out how to raise the cash! Thought about asking my wife for some of her funds .....naw, I'll wait!

Sorry to dig up an old thread but i've just been reading through all the posts as i'm about to kick off on my cnc build (thread to follow!)

Just wondering how you have found your spindle so far?

I've been talking with Kevin at Damencnc and he has been very helpful. I've been looking at the C41/47-B-DB-P-ER25, but i'm just wondering whether this one may be a little too big for my needs, only as i never use anything bigger then a 10mm bit.

I'd be inetrested to hear how your has worked out!

No Problem...

I have been very happy with the spindle. It is very quiet, and so far, it has handled everything I have thrown at it. it has very little run-out, and cutting inlays is basically a pleasure....

I have also run it for hours straight, with no issues of overheating or anything like that....so all I can say is so far, so good.

I think anything up to about 2HP would be OK, and anything over it, for cutting wood, might be a bit overkill...but that will depend on the machine you have, and what you plan on cutting with it. Even 1.5HP would be OK in my opinion for wood...
