One Of My Newest Efforts at a Mandola , I have been playing around with the latest and am making a basic guitar shape and am using a nice piece of Lutz I bought at auction here . Not sure about what to use for the neck . I have walnut , mahagony , and cherry .

Any recommendations . OHH BTW the top is going to be black ala "hesh" :D

Hi Wudwerkr,

My 12 year old daughter and I are building a "mandolaetto"-basically the same thing you are building.

What are the dimensions of yours? Ours is 10" wide at the lower bout and 14 " long.X 2-1/2" deep.

I will post some pictures when I get a chance.
Brad

Mine Measures 10"-3/4" lower bout 15" long and 2-1/4" thick So Slightly larger , yet a tad thinner .
I do have mine Arched 1/4" across the 10-3/4" and 15" dimensions . Was not easy to arch the wood that much , wanted to crack . But with lotsa water and patience it worked . How it holds up ? well corts not in on that one yet ?

Look forward to seeing your pics !! [:Y:] [:Y:]

James, I don't think that back bracing is optimal. For one thing it looks quite bulky, but the thing that worries me most is that there are several abrupt "stops", where the brace ends are not reinforced . As a result you have a dramatic change in stiffness there, that can cause them to come loose, or start a crack in the much more flexible unbraced part of the back. I'd recommend that you carve the brace ends way down and hold them in place somehow, the most common method is by "tucking" them under the linings. The butt jointed braces (most folks would lap joint them) also need reinforcement...

I hope you didn't close the box already...?

Thanks for the insite , I have been looking at the bracing and thinking about carving it down some . Those are lap jointed braces btw they arnt but jointed , just got a little carried away with my cut. I generally dont tuck them under the kerfing because I never use binding , however i did leave the lower bout a little short didnt I .
No it isnt closed yet .
I made them beefier because I bent that back a 1/4" in 10-3/4" width . It took alot of water and patience and i am afraid that if i carve them I may loose some of my strength for the arch ?

what do you think ? I appreciate any input . [:Y:]

Hi All:

This is my first 'official' post. I am hobby builder and am currently working on a Don Kawalek OM kit. I've set-up a blog to record the build, which can be found here: http://northwaystringedinstruments.blogspot.com/. Please feel free to critique away. If any of you see things that I can improve and/or do differently, I'm all ears!

Here are a couple of pics:

Thanks for looking!

Here's the first mandolin I've bought. I'm quite enjoying it so I'm sure I will add to the collection over the years.

Hi All:

I've made quite a bit of progress in recent days. I actually strung the OM up last night to check for buzzing, string height, etc. Shockingly, it sounds pretty dang good. I've got some tweaking to do - lower the nut a bit, as well as the bridge, and then of course, finish it (trying to decide between straight tru-oil, or some combination of shellac & tru-oil . . . any thoughts?). But, here it is, 'almost' complete:

Thanks for looking!

Best,
Eric

Thanks WudWerkr! Once I get it all set up and finalized I'll try to post a sound clip (though, my playing has a lot to be desired . . . I'm just sayin' :? ).

Very nice Haans. I really like the look of that tortoise binding... makes it look dark, like some bluesy bluegrass should be coming out of her. Did you use ebony for the points?
and a Polished ebony pickguard? Nice..
