Is it logical to think that when putting a radius on a fingerboard that it should match the radius of the top? Or is a radius not even necessary and it will be fine with a flat fingerboard?

Hi Frank

Normally it doesn't match the top on a steel string guitar for instance I use a 28' radius on my tops and 16' on the fingerboard.

Classical Guitars normally have a flat fingerboad with no radius

Well for a steel string guitar a radius is very common as well as much more confortable to play. Most common as 12 to 16" radius. I use a compound radius that is about 12" at the nut and 20 at the 18th fret. The radius of the top has nothing to do with it. Mostly it's just preference, which you choose but I would suggest puting a radius on your fingerboard.

How most of you do the compound radius to the fingerboard? Is it just starting with sanding the whole board using a sanding block with the radius you want to be at the nut end of the fingerboard, then leveling the board flat according to string lies?
