Hi

I'm a joiner based on the uk. I've got a CNC, and I've been looking for a project to use it which isn't just cutting up sheets of ply and MDF!

I've decided on an electric guitar because I wanted to try something that's a relatively well trodden path, involved some interesting modeling (I'm also using this an an exercise in learning 3D modelling) with the chance to get something useful at the end of the process.

So, I've begun by modelling the body of an SG, something that has taken me the best part of a day to do - well I am learning as I go!!

Heres my first results:

any thoughts or comments gratefully recieved!

Cheers

Stu

Stu you have modeled a Les Paul, not a SG. That said, excellent choice! [:Y:] What kind of modeler?

   .... .and that's why red wine and internet forums shouldn't mix!

It was modelled in Rhino, and the process wasn't too bad once I'd got my head round it. To create the top, I used a series of curves and then applied a surface to them. I'd also tried a 2 rail sweep and lofting but the results weren't quite right - but that's probably down to my technique more than anything.

I will try and add a bit more detail then I will try and route a blank out of some offcuts to see if it works!

You will love Rhino after you learn a little of it. I have been using if for about 7 years, but only get to work on it a few hrs a week. A Les Paul was the first model I did as well, and I used curves but chose patch for the surface. To me, that is one of the hardest things to learn in Rhino.......there are so many different ways to get to the same destination. You have to choose the right way for you.

...and a left handed Les Paul to boot. :)

Hey, that does not look bad...you might want to re-do the top, to get closer to a '59 LP.

Here are a couple of renderings I recently did for a model I did in Solidworks:

Renderings are done with Modo...See how the top is "curved" with a re-curve around the edges?

Thanks Cyborg.

To be honest, I was just glad to get something finished at all. I'm going to have another play with it to try and get the curves to be a more accurate reflection of an original.
