If we were on the metric system like the rest of the civilized word, this would be easy. But alas, we aren't so I need some help.
A 3lb cut of shellac is 3 lbs per gallon of alcohol. How many ounces per cup does that equal? Or heck, grams per liter would even work so I could then move to the metric system. Any help?

I'm assuming you are talking US gallons here Paul.

1 US gallon = 3.785412 litres

1lb = 453.5924 gms

So a 3lb cut would be 1360.7772gms/3.784512 litres

More simply 3lb cut = 360gms / litre

                2lb cut = 240gms / litre

                1lb cut = 120gms / litre

Yes a move to metric would help!

Metric sucks. It's all based on the number 10. Try deviding ten into 3. Or 4. The system does not lend itself to fractions, and I think best in fractions.

Metric is best for those who count on their fingers, therefor, ten.

Actually, since all of my measuring devices are in US measurements, I guess I'm just dreaming that the metric would be easier.
So, that said, how many ounces per cup would a 3 lb cut be?

I rarely have to divide something into uneven amounts, and frankly, simple decimals are easier make more sense.

There is nothing in the world that makes less sense to me than fractional inches, except perhaps for decimal inches, which I don't have a ruler for.

Measuring half a mm accurately? Very, very easy.

Metric for me, Use decimals not Fractions and problem solved.

Three. 3lbs=48oz. Gallon=128 oz (volume oz's). Cup=8oz. Cup = 1/16
gallon. 48/16=3.

Why's that terribly silly, really? Sloppy, yeah. The more 'incorrect' part of it all that we refer to it as 'weight' when what we actually measure is mass? Obviously, this only works in our specific gravitaional field, but still.

I just figure on taking the # of ounces of alcohol, divide it by 8 for the ounces of shellac for a one pound cut... Then multiply for whatever pound cut you need.

If you measure everything by weight on a scale, that should work with SI or metric units.

touche. Point taken. I meant that in the 'day to day' usage, it doesn't cause a great deal of harm. People needing to actually do things with the numbers besides, well, measure them (which is what 99% of people do: need x amount/weight/mass of substance y) should know the difference between the weight and mass and where each is appropriate.
