Before I actually go through with re-wiring my guitar I'd like to make sure the wiring diagram I have is right. I'm using a Gibson 490R pickup with GFS's dream 180 for the bridge. With a 3-way tele switch I got from GFS. If you guys could help me out I would be thankful! This is the first time and I wanna get to this. I'm using the tip from the soldering topic and will wire as much as possible outside the guitar. The rest is me checking, double, triple, quadruple checking the diagram. Thanks again if you helped me out!

Info(if any thing else needed ask!)

you should be fine, its a pretty simple harness, do your prep and take your time. looks like youve got all the right parts you just need to do it. the worst thing that can happen is you run into a snag and have to re solder a couple wires. though its preferable to get it right the first time if dont its not the end of the world, your mistakes aren't permanent.

btw have you made any progress on your build or have you given up?

It's a pretty simple job, just take your time. The smaller and the cleaner your solders are, the best it is, but if not, again, it's not the end of the world.

What's your soldering equipment and materials?

Francis

Thanks for the advice, and for equipment. Soldering iron and solder haha, not much!

Anyways I got the switch, and pots wired along with the capacitor. I have to wait till after Wednesday.

Hey. I would like you people to check out a diagram for simple electronics that could have been double-checked at any number of other sources by searching google; such as Seymour Duncan's website. I know it looks simple, but it's only pots, a 3-way switch, humbuckers, and an output jack... nothing fancy like push-pulls, phase, splitting, etc... oh it doesn't only look simple. It is simple and I could have just followed this diagram, and other diagrams, or read up on how these components work and understood the diagram.
Also, here are links to the humbuckers that I'm using just in case you guys don't know what humbuckers are, or if you don't know which humbuckers I'm using, which is irrelevant when viewing this diagram since it's so simple. Also, I thought posting those links would be handy to try and show that I did "research" before hand so no one would come and bust my chops.
Also, I decided to post this here in a new thread instead of just continuing it on the thread I started a couple days ago where I stated I WOULD be doing this. I felt the status change from "will" to "am about to" do it warranted a new thread.
Hope you guys can help!
Chris

#1 on this. All is said. If you want to double check the diagram, just double check it on... seymour's duncan site, Lollar's site, Gibson's site, GFS's site... and probably on the instructions that came with you pickup.

Also you need more than a soldering iron and solder to do a nice job.

Cutters, Soldering paste, Stripping and crimping tools, magnifier, some handy-hand, multimeter, probably a desoldering pump, some screwdrivers, tweezers, mask, sandpaper or acetone to clean up, etc, etc...

Wow.. I thought people here were friendly, maybe the thought that I might of been in a rush or so never crossed your mind? And yea i may post info that may seem useless but I'm new. So of course I have no clue what to post to help. I'm asking for advice, not for you to be a jerk. Oh by the way I have been double checking, I decided that a pool of luthiers would help too. So excuse me if I'm just cautious about the whole thing, stage fright you know? BUT by the way your acting your clearly high and mighty and above me in every way and never had to go through any questions when you started. Oh and my bad if I started a new topic, my memory is not exactly my strong point.

i tend to have some sympathy for new folks who dont know what they are doing and try to be helpful, to you in particular, but when you say things like this you sound like a pmsing 13 year old. if what chris said pisses you off thats fine, it kinda pisses me off a little to, but dont start another fighting match on here. you arent new anymore sorry that but that one wont fly anymore, you've been on here long enough and had enough confrontations you ought to know what is and isnt ok by now. frankly it kinda pisses me off that based on what one person said you have decided that no one on here is freindly. you have recieved a lot of grace kid, from me and just about everyone else. if you want to gain some respect around here this is not the way to do it.

Well I'm sorry if it appears that I want you to do stuff for me, thats not how I am. Yes I'm aware of the fact solder can be unsolderd(?) but that doesn't mean I wont be at least a tad nervous with rewiring my first guitar.

Skankstro, you definitely need to get a solder pump.
Makes taking things apart much easier.
I have wired up about 10 or so gits,
and sometimes they just don't work right,
even when wired exactly as the diagram.
The last one I did was taken apart 4 times, and re-soldered in different ways.
I gave up for now on that one. Someday I'll figure it out,
but, it is psychedelic!
Electricity is way strange.
WTF!!!
Oh, I never asked anyone here what to do...
I'll just figure it out.
Something one has to do when building "stuff".
Good luck!

Okay, thanks for the interest.
The bird in da bag was photo-ed by me wife,
and all the other stuff on de table "photo-shopped" out.
The geetar? Well. it's got a Seymour Duncman (ha!)
overwound hum pup next to the bridge.
A "supposed" S.D. p-90 at da f.b.
P-90 from e-bay, might just be a S.D. cover.
Anyway, wired it up with 2 vols and tone.
No switch.
Like a p or jazz bass.
Tried the EMG diagram,
tried the S.D. diagram.
Looked at another git I wired and did it that way.
Plus I split the coil on the S.D. hummer.
It works, but, the vol controls do weird things, like get softer at the top?
The tone is scrunched up at the top, like a linear taper pot.
That git is playable, and sounds great,
but, you gotta know what it's controls should be set at, which is very strange.
Back burner at ths point.
Oh, I might add that I've built 3 tube git amps from scratch that work,
and sound pretty darn good,
so I can read schematics/chassis layouts.

This is one of my all time favorite wiring jobs. I've looked at this set up many times now in awe. I'm seriously jealous that you got to work with David Myka. Fantastic luthier, and by all accounts a truly nice guy.

That's a beautiful guitar, and an incredible wiring scheme. But I just have to say that I'd never remember what all of that does, nor would I ever be able to use a third of the options presented, were it my guitar. I would spend so much time trying to remember what I was doing, I wouldn't be able to play, lol.
Great job, though. My hat's off to you.

Wow Chris, that last photo showing all the switches and things, reminds me of a guitar I told my cousin I thought would be fun to build. Use three splittable humbuckers, and cover the whole guitar top with those little mini toggles, along with leds of course. Make it a puzzle that is able to be solved but you gotta go through the sequences of hitting the toggles and lighting the leds in proper order to get it to play. Take it to a "friend" and ask him to play it for you! laughing6-hehe

I love that walnut on Myka's personal.

skankstro I think what everyone is trying to tell you is to give some of this stuff a try before posting questions so you can learn from it. I promise you that you will learn quickly from mistakes....least wise, I have! laughing6-hehe

BTW, what ever happened to the body you started with the Red Stained Alder? I hope you have kept it.

Mike

chris do you know much about the "cap" switches on myka"s guitars? i am assuming that maybe they are wired with different capacitors for each tone pot? i was just kinda curious what those were all about or if you know much about them.

thanks for all the info chris, i figured that was probably the basic principle behind it but i wanted to make sure that it wasnt something else entirely. i am contemplating doing something similar with push pull pots on my current project, it seems like it would be fun to wire in as an additional option. though i dont know that i would actually use it much, since i dont really have enough experience yet to know which types of caps i prefer i think setting up a guitar this way would be a good way compare a couple types side by side. for normal playing i dont know if i would want to mess with it but as a showcase guitar (especially for myka's) i could definitely see the value.

uhh question? The P-switch from stew mac, with the tone pots. Does it just connect to the same lug on the switch where the hot wire goes to? It has 7 lugs to solder to as follows

1. Series link (coil-tap) of neck pickup
2. Hot output, to volume pot
3. Series link (coil-tap) of bridge pickup
4. Ground (without shield) from bridge pickup
5. To ground (back of volume pot)
6. Hot wire from neck pickup
7. Hot wire from bridge pickup

Im only asking because im not familiar with the p switch.

Umm.... He might have multiple projects going at once? Honestly if you aren't going to be helpful don't bother answering the bloody question. This guy gets it. He's inexperienced, he asks stupid questions. This just so happens to be a pretty good question. I'm certain he's not the only one wanting the answer to it either.

Which is a good question?
The original thread one,
or the one about the lug hook-up?
Follow the diagram,
if it doesn't work right, and you've checked everything against the diagram,
and you don't know what to do,
then ask what you should do.
