That's some serious sandpaper real estate for sure! I wouldn't want to get my coat tail caught in that one.

Sorry JJ......I've given the wrong impression. This is not my sander. I found this on youtube and thought it was a neat idea as used treadmills are very common. Strong motors, variable speed, etc.......seemed like a good fit for luthery. I thought the granite was a good idea as well, slick and flat.

the 4 foot chunk of granite costs as much as buying a real sander ... but if you have the bits lying around, and the room ... not bad

A person would want a stop along the lenght of the belt to help hold the material in place . and as for the granite , It could be replaced with a maple or similar hard top and have a thin layer of graphite material applied to the surface as is used on wide belt sanders to keep it level . Its basically the same design machine as are used in the automotive industry for engine head resurfacing . Good Idea !

Offcuts can be awesome. Just need to find a shop that does really big jobs (the bigger the jobs, the bigger the offcuts they'll throw out) and find an offcut that's just barely too small for a bathroom sink :)

Great for rocketting wood across the shop. Other than that it's an accident waiting to happen.

Stay safe!

Well, I don't know how high rockets fly around your place, but at the speed the sander is spining, I doubt a dropped piece of wood would go farther than a few feet away...

Hmm, I can't view the photo from work but can guess. This may be good as I have an older treadmill that just blew the belt and I was going to buy a new treadmill. The drums would be on the smaller side and I don't know how the sand paper would attach. My other question would be the RPM's. What rpm range would be normal for a drum sander vs. the rpm range on the treadmill. Does anyone think the slower rpm's of the treadmill roller would be too slow?

Thanks as always!

Philip

Treadmills make me tired (and hungry). I wonder if a sander made from a treadmill would make me tired.
