Well here's my sophomore effort. Sitka top with asymetrical parallel braces, flamed maple back and sides ebony fittings....standard issue archtop stuff. I would like to give Dave Stewart personal thanks for his help sorting out a finishing bug. Oh yeah, it's Em-6000 with tinted Em-1000 for my colors.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Stunning and not gaudy like some with 15 plies of purfling!

Having finished my first archie I now know how much work that was. Looks great! Any issues bending the cutaway? What did you use for carving the top and back?

Great job and nice work on the finish. Did you dye the maple or tint the lacquer or is it just naturally dark?

Alan-It's a full three inches deep.
Terence-I had a lot of issues with the cutaway but finally got it figured out. I just used a shop made scrub plane and the ubiquitous Ibex planes.
Chris-Yeah, my first one was an archtop too.
Jim-I don't know if I can say it's my design as I basically just scaled a Hill-style cello tailpiece to what I thought looked right on a guitar. They are a major PITA to make though.
Darrel-I tinted the Em-1000. Both the backs for this one and my first were actually pretty ugly pieces. They both had some pretty bad discolorations/mineral streaks. This piece was almost a green color, my goal was to let the figure show but to neutralize the green with a reddish brown. It turned out a lot more orange than I wanted but I'm going with it.
Nelson-I just used the Sacconi-style tail adjuster ala Benedetto. Oh and I'm trying to make this my day job.

Very nice. I too like the colors. Going a bit to the orange separates it from the traditional amber tones just the right amount. Also, if not for the PITA work anyone could do it, right?

Jason, that is so incredible! Hard to believe it's number 2!!! Great job. Very clean and the color is wonderful. I'm loving archtops more and more. I was thinking about using a similar tailpiece fastener on the flattop I'm building with a floating bridge . The fastener threads into the bottom of the tailpiece then? Does your tailpiece have a fulcrum too? I was kicking around the idea of just gluing it to the top right above the heel block but there must be a reason I haven't seen that. (Like because the fulcrum is important so the strings are straight to the tailpiece without another bend?)

Ummm, Jason, after seeing this build, may me most humbly suggest you stay away from building flattops and keep on carving. Ya know after ya carve a few it gets under yer skin and well Carved Tops Anonymous ain't no help.

Yup you keep doin just what you just did. Me like.
