Hi all,

I recently finished number 12. The fellow I built it for wanted some vintage aspects, hence the through slot saddle, open gear tuners and unbleached bone saddle and nut.

Here are the specs:

Top: Adirondack Spruce
Back/Sides/Head Veneer/Bridge: Brazilian Rosewood
Bindings/Purfling: Bubinga and Abalone (Zipflex)
Rosette: Bubinga and Abalone (Zipflex)
Neck: Mahogany
Fretboard: Ebony
Bridge Pins: Fossilized Mammoth Ivory
Nut/Saddle: Unbleached Bone
Finish: French Polished Shellac
Tuners: Open Gear Gotoh

Also, it turned out that I had a small, orphaned Brazilian Rosewood Back set that turned out to be just enough wood to make a tenor uke. So I did that, copying many of the design elements from the guitar. You can see it, not yet finished, in the last couple of pictures. The guitar will be out the door before the uke is completed.

Thanks for looking,
Pat

Wow Pat, that just had me mesmerized. That is just some good old fashioned craftsmanship. I'd be proud to be able to complete an instrument that looks that good.

Thanks for sharing,
Hutch

Pat that's just fine-looking.
I really like Bubinga as bindings, and it looks great against the Brazilian.

Super job Pat. Really like the zipflex on the headstock.

Outstanding! How many BRW guits have you built Patt? Just wondering at what point one feels comfortable working with it. [clap] the pic of the side shows nice depth. Nice wood choice and elegant all the way around. Great uke too!

Thanks for the comments. This is the first guitar (and uke) that I've done in Brazilian rosewood. Despite the fact that the wood came from a stump, I was surprised to find how much it was on my mind that this wood is endangered and, therefore, not to be wasted with a stupid mistake. So I did take extra precautions such as coating all sides with thin CA to reduce the chances of cracking. Happily, I found that it bent about the same as EI rosewood, i.e. easily.

The bubinga was also a pleasant surprise. It also bent easily and I am happy with the way it goes with both the abalone and the rosewood. I also like the way seams disappear with the quilted bubinga. The rosette is "semi-radial" having been done in about one inch segments yet, for the most part, the seams between the segments disappeared with CA glue and some sanding.

One funny thing is that I posted the same set of pictures on Facebook and it looks like that's going to result in a commission not for a guitar but for a uke!

Pat

A real beauty Pat. So has the guy you built it for seen it finished yet or played it? Would love to hear what he had to say.

Pat, I like the way the rosette and the fingerboard tie together. I have yet to try and inlay snowflakes and cat eyes. But I really like the closeup of the Uke. If the guitar is going hopefully the uke is for you. Oh yeah, those pins are a nicely matched set of ivory too. Hard to find the brown.
