I just saw that Grizzly's running a deal on a combo pack of cailpers and dial indicator on magnetic base, for $32.95. I have similar models of both - and I think the calipers cost this much alone. Some of the comments on the dial indicator aren't so complimentary regarding stability of the rig, but I think it's probably fine for occasional deflection testing. Worked fine for me...

Harbor freight has a dial indicator for $12.00. I made a decent thickness gauge with it.

Don't know about deflection testing yet as I'm still a newbie.
