I will replace my 1HP/650CFM dust collector with a more powerful machine, at least 1200CFM I assume. I am running multiple machines out of it, with gates however, the 650CFM works, but at the extreme of its capability with the inevitable air leaks. I'd like more airflow. Any recommendations? What do you guys think of the Grizzly 2HP w/canister? Any caveat? Any brand I should avoid? I notice a great disparity in prices for what looks like the same machines between Jet, Delta, Grizzly, Rikon etc.

I have the jet model with the upper bag 2 hp 220V unit and have 8 machines and a floor sweep and have no problems . HOWEVER , i seldom have more than 1 machine running and have everything gated.

The quality of the dust piping system is as important as the unit itself btw.

Based on what I have , I would say u should be good with that system .

I just put in a Clearvue Max and it has astounding suction. And it's pretty amazing how efficiently the cyclone separates out the fines. It will easily handle 2 machines at once. If you have a small shop, it's hard to run efficient duct work. Sweeping bends with large diameter ducts take up a tremendous amount of space. This machine has the static pressure to overcome some inefficiency in the duct system.

You probably know this already but if you want to get the bulk of the small particles, the collector is the easy part. You will never get great dust collection unless you spend a fair amount of time and money running good duct work and modifying many of your machines for better collection.

Check out the Penn State Industries Tempest series. Most of them have two canisters end to end for double surface area. Most ship now with Clark nanofiber filters which may even be a step up from HEPA filters. I'm saving my pennies for one.

Thanks all / merci à tous for the responses. However, and perhaps wrongly, I am not looking at cyclone-types, the budget I want to allocate to a new dust collector is more in the low $$$ than the $$$$. I'd like to know if anybody has the 2HP Grizzly w/canister, or Rikon or similar machine, and what they think of it.

Laurent, i have one of the Harbor Freight 2 HP dust collectors and it works great. It's a cheaper option than some of the others but i wouldn't hesitate to buy one again.

That being said, i do plan on upgrading mine and i would probably look at Grizzly because they have parts available. Harbor Freight is not the best option if you need parts.

If you're on a budget, and want a good cyclone for the price, give the Shop Fox 2HP Cyclone a look see. It's a new one at Grizzly and runs about $865. They also have a 1.5 HP for $695. For cleaner air in the shop you can't go wrong with a cyclone. I have several Grizzly and Shop Fox machines in my shop, and they all give a big bang for the buck when it comes to a small one man shop.

I just replaced my 1hp Jet with a 1 1/2 delta. I also switched over some of the main trunk to 6" PVC (I found some affordable options around here and online for the SDR 35). I have noticed a big difference in suction power and expect that to improve a bit when I add more 6" pipe and tighten the whole system up.

I went with the Delta 1 1/2 machine because I found it very cheaply on craigslist around here. If I hadn't found that I would have gone with the Grizzly 1 1/2 hp unit because it has the largest impeller of that style collector. If I could run 220 I would have gone with the 2hp unit for sure. I had a Wynn filter on the Jet but the delta came with its own cannister (which had the cleaning arm inside). When I switched the Jet to the cannister from the bags I also noticed better performance. I installed the blower near the ceiling so the trunk ran straight off of it. I will take a photo tonight, although I could only do that because I had high ceilings.

I would love a cyclone unit but room/electric power/$$$ make it not an option for me at the moment. I wish it were.

I ran standard air ducting from lowes with gates at all my machines. I used duct tape on all seems and connections. While I do not have the canister version, mine works just fine. My longest run is about 50' from the machine it has enough suction to get the job done.

I would be curious on what you settle on , I am in the market for a dust collection system as well, I have my power tools set up in my garage which is a two car garage with one half occupied nightly by the better halfs Lexus , so space is a real issue...

I purchased the 2 horse, single bag, canister top Grizzly a couple of years ago when our shop did a restoration on a 19th century staircase on location. I brought in a number of stationary tools and it handled 2 tools at a time quite well, not including a 20'' planer, still have it and use it time to time when we rearrange things or just have too many tools running for our cyclone. Nice collector, relatively quiet and has a steel impeller. T

I'll bite: what is the advantage of a cyclone? Looking at the specs I see the CFM is roughly the same than equivalent dust collectors, am I missing something?

I have the Grizzly cyclone collector, the things they don't tell you is that the filter cartridge will need replacing about once a year ( $250 ). It is difficult to operate the clearing brush inside . If I had to do it over , and I am thinking about it , either a clearview or Phila Ind model. I have better suction with the cyclone than I did with the bag type , and the bag type when used hard will allow the finer dust back into the shop .
I think Bob Cef had a clearview he was selling . I do like the larger truck line that is on the Grizzly . I plumbed my collector up with stove pipe and schedule 40 pipe. Be sure to run a ground on it , and sealed it with the metal tape. Duct tape didn't hold.

A cyclone works as a pre-filter which should prolong the life of the filter & prevent it from clogging.

I have a Onedia V-systems Cyclone and love it. It is insane how much more efficient they are than the canister types. I had a Delta canister for some time and it worked fine. There is, however, no comparison between the two in terms of performance asn the Onedia clearly wins out, however it was more expensive too.

For just over $1500 you've got the system, and shipping. I've position my shop where my big tools are close enough I just run one single hose out of the machine and swap from machine to machine as needed. It's easy, and more effective for the machine too.

I did buy the remote too and I love that.

A primary advantage of cyclone systems (with good filters) is that they trap dust below the one micron level that is actually harmful to you. Most canister systems won't. Of course this is only true if you hood/duct your machines effectively. On the off chance that you haven't seen it already, Bill Penz' site is an interesting read.

Just remember that if using pvc piping it WILL build static electricity , so ground the pipeing otherwise you can get your bell rung pretty hard with that static shock ! " nooooooo dont ask how I know ""
