A little while back when I was refretting a guitar that I made, I stumbled upon this question. How are you supposed to file the ends of the frets flush to the fingerboard edge without scratching the finish? The guitar did not have a bound fingerboard, I also do not have a tool to under cut the fret tang, but I could get one if necessary. Any info is appreciated.

That's one of the mysteries of the ages....

I mask the edge and file with my angled file doohickey until I begin to scrape the tape, then go really carefully from that point. See Tim McKnight's post on fretwork posted on this site.
