The martin Guitar makers connection has ebony button schallers on sale for under $30. I think they're $25, but I'm not sure. I bought a really nice EIRW set from them and it was only $45. I know that the materials are "rejects" or discontinued parts, but a lot of the materials are pretty good. I can't wait to buy a bunch of wood during martin fest this summer. BTW, here are the tuners and the EIRW.

Brian,

I can only guess, but I would say that they're not out to make big profits from GMC; they have their factory for that. My few dealings with them makes me think there's some old fashioned good intentions at work too.

about 90% of the things they sell are not on the website. To buy them, you have to call Gail and Liz (They run it). BTW, I get 1 piece rejected mahogany necks for $5 from them. I ask for the ones with wide grain and I get really nice 1 piece mahogany necks for $5.

No, Martin just doesn't want to use the small ebony knobs any more. BTW, the only difference between these and the ones you would buy at LMI are these say CF Martin on the back and are $25 and the LMI ones have an "S" and cost a lot more.
