Hi all.

Just wondering if any of you might have a solution.

All the Indien rosewood set I've ever had all had some twisted corkscrew shape. Like if their some sort of internal tension that is forcing to wood to twist. Of course, I was always able to work it out and make a proper back with it once it was braced, but it makes it diffcult to work. I don't care much when the sides are slightly twisted, but the when it's the two halfs of the back, thicknessing them and working the glue joint is a bit of a pain.

I tried ironing them, but it did no good.

So I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks!

I"m having a similar problem with 2 carpatian spruce tops. They have some twist and buckle in them. when you bookbatch the halves, it doubles the problem making it difficult to glue.

I'd love to hear any suggestions people may have. I was going to just try to glue them up, and then plane out the difference and hope I get a nice flat top.

thanks!

Try Super soft II
or another verneer softener.
spray them then clamp flat with room for air to circulate around them.
Then let sit for a few days still clamped flat.

Mike

Bake between two flat metal plates in a 350º F. oven for a couple of hours. [not the spruce]

Thanks Mike, I may give it a try, although I'd like to avoid veneer softner. Just don't like the stuff so much...

Thanks Howard, I'll give that a try. I just gotta find myself some metal plates with the proper specs!

Try spraying both sides lightly with water and fabric softener and place between 2 sheets of glass and leave in the sun for a couple of hours turning every 20 mins or so. Its just a little less aggressive than the oven.

I flatten stuff on my table saw top, with my heat balnket, a piece of ply and some weights. I spritz the wood, wrap in foil, turn up the blanket like I am bending, the ply and weights on top. Wait five minutes and turn off, let cool .... works for me. rosewoods are easy to do this way ....

Thanks Tony,

So it works even though the blanket only covers part of the boards?

Yes .. 6 inch blanket on 8-9 inch wide piece .. the main bow is in the centre so it works

I was thinking the blankets too. I straightened a potato chip Brazilian back that way quite easily to my surprise..

I'm having kind of the same problem with my zebrawood. it looks like a smilely face. I wiped the wood with a wet rag once the clamped it flat with some peaces under the edges to raise it up a little. it worked until I brought the wood back in to my house were its a warmer and it bowed right back up.

I tried that as well before and it didn't do any good.

I use a single blanket set for about 340 - flat surface/side-by-side slats, blanket, single slat on top, another flat board, and about 60 lbs of weight. There's not much need for wetting rosewood - as Howard suggested, hit a temp around 350 and the wood develops a nice case of amnesia and flattened out. I've had to flatten several sets of coco or BRW, and never an issue with things getting flat and staying flat. Only caution is resist the temptation to pull the wood out of the stack before it's full cooled...even warm BRW seems to be willing to bend a bit....must be all that resin.

Thanks for the extra info Todd. Next time I'll try without wetting the wood.
