At last! I decided to do the "free shipping" thing by taking delivery of my SB BT-48 direct from their booth at the end of last weekend's Maker Faire in San Mateo. It worked out well - I saved a bunch of $$ doing it this way. SB loaded it onto my truck with a fork lift at the show, and with the help of five strong lads and a Genie Lift we got it off pretty easily at my workshop.

Now I have to rearrange my workshop to make enough workspace around it, wire up some power, and get one of my old computers set up for it, then lots of reading/learning/testing/breaking bits/rinse and repeat!!

I still have lots of questions about which 3D CAD package would be best for guitar design......I'll post more after I've got it installed and running.

Cheers,
Dave F.

You will love having CNC around the shop and should get good results with the Shopbot!

Looks very nice. Rhino is a popular and powerful 3D program you may want to look at. A lot of folks use it.

Very good Dave, I have the shopbot 32. It is fun stuff. Be sure to check out the shop bot forum if you have not already done so. Good luck and have fun.

Nice! Let us know how you like it. As time goes on, I use my CNC as much for jig making as I do for making actual parts. Good router jigs go a long way...!

My vote for the most cost effective CAD/CAM package is Rhino & RhinoCAM. It's hard to beat the functionality at that price.

Have Fun,
Trev

I would like to recommend Madcam for Rhino. It sits seamlessly inside Rhino and works just as seamlessly. Ask Shane Neifer what he thinks of it. I am one of the US resellers, and to my knowledge the only one that does tech support stateside.

I'll throw in another vote for MadCAM. It really is seamless within Rhino, and works very well--very easy to use and very reasonably priced.

Yup Dave, MadCAM for me. Mike Turner (Turmite) has been GREAT at walking me through the whole process and Joakim (the MadCAM dude in Scandawhovia) has been very responsive to our suggestions for a 3 axis cnc used to make guitar related things. Give it a try Dave, easy to use and not really that expensive!

Here is an example of a recent product:

(I didn't like the top version, it took maybe 10 minutes to adjust the lines, re-post and rout again. Now I am happy!)
