I had a few guys coming over to check out some of my guitars, knowing they were strummers, not fingerstlye, so I installed removable pick guards to protect the finish. Afterwards, I left one on for several months and when I removed it, well, not a warm feeling. [headinwall] Ruined the finish underneath. I thought I would share my experience in the hopes that it saves someone else this warm feeling. Clinton

I had a bad finish problem with a French polished top last year when I left a Kling On on it for several weeks - against the manufacturer's instructions. gaah
The problem area recovered somewhat over the next several months, but eventually needed to be refinished.

Well, it seems you are damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

I had a guy come by with a repair, and to test a new guitar, and I had been thinking I would put a clear pickgard on it, but didn't.
Sure enough, he scraped up the finish, and I had to re-polish the area.

I was so mad, I added $100 extra to his repair quote. After doing the repair, there was more to do than I estimated, and the money came out about right.
What to learn? Get mad at everyone bringing in a repair job!

That doesn't help you with YOUR problem, I don't know what the cling-on is made of that would react so strongly with shellac and varnish.
It must be vinyl.

It's vinyl. I've used them on oil varnish finished guitars, but only after it's cured for at least a month, and I always remove it after playing.

Added/Edit, I would suspect results could vary depending on the finish manufacturer too.
