I am intending on trying a tone ring experimental bracing system kind of thing?! - basically a bent piece of hog, thickening the sides/bracing the top, around the lower bout with a full width spruce bridge plate and only braced around the soundhole thus freeing up more of the top to resonate. Has anyone tried this sort of thing?

What other experimental bracing ideas have you tried and how successful were they?

I'm a little confused... how 'bout a drawing?

Here was a fairly recent thread about curved bracing. Seems like an interesting area to explore. http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=31536

Nothing experimental personally, but you might find this interesting - "The Flying Top" http://brunner-guitars.com

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
