Starting to work on my very first fan fretted guitar

Here are some first pictures of the neck, this is a side project so it may take a while to complete it...

Fingerboard is Brazilian Ironwood, neck is quatersawn Sapelli Mahogany

The scales are 27'' on the bass side and 25.5'' on the treble side, the pivot is at the 12th fret...

Nice work, can't wait to see your progress. What grit did you take the fingerboard to while sanding?

Brazillian Ironwood... Is this a type of rosewood? In the family maybe? Looks very nice, some of the straightest grain I've seen on a board in a while. Great work, I've been interested in the multi-scale fretboard although I have yet to play one. Unless I meet somebody that has one I may need to build one to experience it firsthand.

Question, what type of bridge setup are you doing for this? Most of what I've seen for fanned frets is what appears to be a custom bridge job. I'd love to find a resource for individual string bridge pieces as I like the idea of having each string having solid, individual contact with the body of the guitar. Anyone wish to chime in on this?

You can also name it:

1) Caesalpinia ferrea or Machaerium scleroxylum Tul
2) morado
3) palo santos
4) caviuna
5) Brazilian ironwood
6) Bolivian rosewood, though it is not actually rosewood

7) Of course everybody will all of a sudden know what this wood is because everybody knows it under its appellation PAUO FERRO...



I'm probably going to be using Novax Bridges (which are very expensive) simply because everybody wants ABM bridges because of all the ridiculous forum hype and without even actually having tested or playing them.

I go down to 320 grit, then I use 000 steel wool

Then I use Metarex to polish the frets, I've made these short videos at one point...

I used individual bridges like that on a fanned fret bass I built. I got cheapies from Bezdez in Canada (ebay) no idea if they do them in guitar sizes.

I've built 3 acoustic guitars with fans, because I'd never even been in the same room as one.

I'm passively planning a fanned fret hardtail strat with variax electrics, but it's still in the dreaming stages......
