Hey,
I'm planning out my next lap steel.
Going with this shape, a fret board similar to this one,
and this crazy maple for the cap.
Lyptus for the back and neck.
No carve on the top, but a chamfer, or bullnose.
Interesting grain on the side of the maple,
so no binding required.
Stereo jack, 3 way switch with some passive pickup.
A rosewood bridge with a Baggs LB6 piezo pickup.
No vol or tone, as I don't want anything to cover up the maple.
Anybody have success with a piezo saddle on a solid body?

Alan I haven't built using a piezo yet but wanted to
chime in to say I sure like the photo and look forward to
seeing that fantastic wood on your new build.
( I'm guessing you know that tailpiece looks like an
Alembic piece)

When I started getting interested in building last year
a lap steel was my first shot.
A friend gave me an Ash board and I just went for it.
Wanted to learn some about LED's and working plexiglass so I
had fun. The first one didn't work...I somehow got a 26.6" scale
and to many wires. The next one worked and sounds great.
Nothing compared to your work but thought you'd get a kick out
of seeing it. It does have a great sound and fun to play.
( it lights up when it's plugged in )

Good for playing in dark clubs at night.

It's fluorescent plexi and my photo skills don't help it any.

As wiring the LED's on the first one was a mistake my solution
was copper foil tape. I didn't know what I was doing but it
was fun and it worked.

Alan it sure wasn't my intention to hi-jack your thread. I'm sure
more interested in seeing your project.
I do apologize if I've crossed a line.

Since I've gone this far I thought you may like to see the
back. The cavity is also covered with the plexi.
I'll refine if I ever build another.

No problemo here.
I am busy with other stuff right now anyway.
I was thinking about fiber optics once,
for what you are doing.

Someone else did it back in the late 70's - can't remember who.
Sounds pretty thin and dry to me.

in response to the video, i can think of some materials that must be acoustically "worse" than concrete: rubber, foam....
i would be rather surprised if Les Paul himself never experimented with concrete

Too bad they added reverb, so you really don't know how it sounds.
I'd hate to stand up and play that thing.
A long tim ago, I heard about a git body made of marble,
and the cosensus was it had a lot of sustain.....
