Does anyone have one of CT Holden's fret slotting jigs? This is my least favorite part of luthiery and I'm still doing them with a StewMac jig. Very boring.

I'm wondering if I can use my Dremel flex-shaft instead of buying the one on CT's site. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I tried using the Dremel and some others when testing the system, but found they bogged down a bit, that's why I use the 1/4HP flex shaft tool. On the other hand, when I hooked my Dremel flex shaft up to a router, that certainly gave it the power it needed. I just released it this month and sales are slow do to the holidays, but have received a lot of inquiries so I expect things to pick up afterwards.

Can you tell me a bit about your flex shaft tool. How does it compare to a foredom? Your price is good and I may be interested as long as the quality is decent. ALso does the flex shaft have a threaded end like the flex shaft on dremel? That is how I attach the flex shaft to my jigs and fixtures.

Hi Shane,

I was tring to keep the price down so I never tried a Foredom. I haven't had any issues with the one I'm using. The flex shaft does not have a theaded end, the way I attach it is I tap the handle and mount it to a lexan base that gets afixed to the jig.

Question for you...

Let's say you get a wonderfully inlaid finger board and need to slot through the inlay (let's say it was slotted before it got done)...

Can you reference the pin in the template and then set down the router and finish the slot for the frets??

What I'm looking for is a way to use a small router bit to cut fret slots in inlayed fingerboards and not cut out the edges (keeping them bound in a manner of speaking)...

Just curious... it's very cool looking device, I see lot's of things you could do with something like that...

Hi Paul,

Yes, the jig has a micro adjustment screw which moves linear slides that changes the height of router bit or saw blade. The arm of the jig can also can be moved like a sliding miter saw.
