Roger,

Did you use a 25.5 scale length? I happen to have some walnut fret boards @ 24.9 scale length. I'd certainly give you one if you are interested. I use a table saw jig to cut my slots. Walnut of course isn't a usual choice for fretboards but I was building some guitars for grandkids and family (keeping costs down). Looks would be fine and the fret slots are accurately cut. You'd have to move your bridge to match the scale by .6. If interested email me directly at dannyrlittle@hotmail.com.
BTW the FB is oversized and have a 12"radius or no radius.

Keep at it!

Ok guys, I've got a question. I've got someone from a different forum telling me how to compensate for the smaller scale fretboard that Danny offered to send me. I hate to say this, but I'm not following at all and was wondering if you guys could validate what he's saying is accurate. My degree is in English, so math and I aren't terribly close friends [headinwall] laughing6-hehe

Quote:
Well, lets see.
Suppose we put a fret right at the end of the neck.
If we move that fret back 0.6", then that's the same as moving all frets back 0.6" since we did nothing to the distance between the frets.
Since the distance between the frets are calculated as fractions of the total distance from nut to bridge, if we move all frets down the fractions are no longer the same.

What we want to do is to move the nut 0.6" down and then keep every fraction between the frets the same.
That means that each distance between the frets get proportionally smaller.
24.9 is 97.7% of 25.5.
Therefore every distance between frets are to be 97,7% smaller for the new neck.
97.7% of 7.07 + 0.3" is 7,204" (the 0.3" behind the saddles are not affected)
A difference of .166

So the shortening of the scale lenght by the whole 0.6 takes place at the nut.
But the position of the last fret, i.e. the end of the neck, is also moved back to 97.7%

I did it in Visio for the 22 fret
Image

Edit:
The equation in my post above should read
(7.37-(25.8-25.5))*24.9/25.5+(25.8-25.5)= 7.204"
Nothing else.

Quote:
Doh!
Just realized!

You don't need to re-route the neck pocket!!!!!!!
Just have the fretboard overhang the end by .166", or skip some frets, then you're free to swap necks as you like.
As long as your frets are at 97.7% of where they ought to be on a 25.5" scale length

Roger,

All I would do is make certain the distance from the 12th fret to the nut is the same as the distance from the 12th fret to the middle of your bridge compensation range. You can manage that in any combination to two things: 1) nut placement and 2) bridge placement. I would do what looks the best given the things you can't change at this point, such as pickup placement, pickguard, etc..

But, tell you what...my LMI template has a 25.4" scale, just 0.1" off the normal fender scale. How about I send you a walnut fb at that scale? It should make it a little easier. I usually radius my fb @ 12", but Fender does a tighter 9 1/2" or so. I'll do 24 fret slots and leave maybe an inch of extra wood past the nut or zero fret position and then you can cut off each end where you need to. I'll also leave it flat so you can put on whatever radius you prefer.

Email me your shipping address. It will take me a day or two to get to it, but I am anxious to see the finished project!

Danny, that would be awesome. Thanks so much! As for radius, I was doing a 12" radius anyway, so what you normally do would be perfect. I sent you an email back on the 28th that had my info. I send it again though [:Y:]

For some reason (moon alignment?) I did not receive your email. Perhaps I mistyped it originally.

Roger,

Shipping the fretboard today. Sorry for the delay. I am preparing to retire at the end of this month and things are a bit hectic. I left every dimension a bit on the long side thinking you can take some off but can't add any. It hasn't been sealed or anything. I was using Tru-Oil (amber) on mine after it is glued to the neck, etc. That will darken it up and show the grain. It is a 25.4 scale with a 12" radius.

Danny

That's perfect, Danny. No worries on the delay because I haven't even ordered more fretwire yet. I just really appreciate you doing this for me. Congratulations on the retirement by the way. What are you retiring from?

Roger

I've been a county administrator since college (32 years). It is the worst time to be in government of any kind but I have truly enjoyed 95% of it. I am so looking forward to making guitars, golf, and grandkids (the 3 g's)!

Let me know how the fretboard works for you. I look forward to pictures!!!

Hey Danny I got the fret board today. It's going to look awesome man. Thanks so much. I'm going to try to get some time to get it glued on and get the fret markers in this weekend. I'll post some pics hopefully by Sunday evening. [:Y:]

Roger,

You are very welcome. How are you going to finish your guitar's neck? Keep in mind that the walnut FB is open pored. An amber Tru-Oil will darken and warm the color nicely. Using a dark or black pore filler (black epoxy?) would look good, too.

OK Virgil hehe. I did actually get another piece put on last night. I'll get a pic up in a few minutes. I won't make a lot of progress today, though, because my youngest son has been having a lot of asthma probs recently (spent the night in the hospital on thursday) and we have to give breathing treatments every 3 hours, so I won't be going to the shop today.

Danny, I'm using Deft spray can lacquer. I'm not really worried about filling the pores. I'll sand to 320 and then spray several coats of the lacquer.

*EDIT* here are the pics.

This pin was given to me by the same friend who is currently a major in the army. He also gave me his 1st infantry division patch to put on my strap. This pin was his grandfather's in WWII. He retired as a full bird colonel. I was pretty honored to get this.

My friend also worked at Picatinny arsenal in NJ and is getting me a couple of .50 cal empties to make my control knobs. That will be cool because they do weapons research there.

Roger,

You have some major mojo (perhaps mojo of higher rank) in this guitar. It is looking good! As a veteran myself, I am proud to see it become a tribute to the military. Thanks!

Ha! I'm a veteran as well! This is lookin freakin' awesome - I'll bring by my amp next week and we'll do a little jamming! And "Mojo" would be a great name for this axe, since it's chock-full of it! [:Y:]

Thank you, guys. Seriously. Not for the comments, but rather for your service. Danny, from the beginning this was going to be in honor of our military. I'm pretty excited to get it this far. I was able to get to the shop to get a couple of things done, so I should have progress pics tomorrow.

I know it's a subjective thing, but I like the look of that fretboard a lot better than the first. It fits with the theme better (to my eye).

Looking forward to your updates!

The position markers are Durhams Water Putty. It worked out really well and gave a nice, aged appearance.

There are some imperfections (quite a few really), but I'm really liking the look. Danny's fret board was great. Fretting went very quickly since the slots were cut correctly [:Y:]

Roger! I love this guitar - even though you mention it's "imperfections" that's alright, it's part of its character - it has it's own quirks and a personality and most of all, it's the ONLY one in the world - a one-of-a-kind for sure and I wish I could play it - it just says it all over the guitar *PLAYYYYYYY MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!* wow7-eyes - good for you the frets went right in - I think you should inlay bullets into the fretboard - like 45 cal casings at the firing pin side - fired and non-fired! is that overkill? you need to play that through an old 59 Bassman amp at 11 and let the neighbors hear what you did!

I have refrained from posting in this thread until a clear direction was established... and I must say I like the direction you've gone. This is not a relic at all, but something with built-in patina - more of a conceptual piece, as it were. It has a well thought out theme, and I approve heartily! Bravo!

Virgil, you crack me up dude  . I don't think I want live .45 cal primers on my guitar hehe. You're just a maniac man, and I like it   . And if you know where I can get my hands on a '59 bassman, well...

Thanks, Chris. I'm glad you like it.

I got to spend some time tonight with John Mayes (we were at an acoustic guitar get-together sponsored by a mutual friend from another forum), and he liked it. He said to give him a ring if i need help getting it set up, so it's nice to know that i've got someone of his caliber (see what I did there?) ready to give me some hands-on help should i need it... and I'll probably need it ;)
