Just wondering what everybody uses most often on their builds, outside of
clear client specifications. Personally I prefer 1 3/4 at nut and 2 3/8 at
bridge and find the "new" MArtin standard 1 11/16 - 2 1/8 a little tight.

Hi Laurent,

I have a guitar from another luthier that is 1 5/8" at the nut & 2 1/4" at the bridge. It's a little too tight at the nut so I'm building my necks with either 1 11/16" or 1 3/4" width at the nut & 2 1/4" string spacing at the bridge. This works well with my fairly short & mildly pudgey digits, so I impose it on instruments being made for others too.

1 3/4"-2 1/4" for most of my custom model and 1 11/16"-2 1/8" for student model. I make the student model tighter because most that by the student models are younger or novist players that like a thinner neck and they tend to be more flat pickers than finger style players.

Anywhere from 1 5/8 at the nut to 1 7/8 - depends on the customer. My standard is 1 3/4, but I make a bunch of 1 13/16 as well. Narrower only seems popular on electrics. At the saddle end, std is 55mm, which is a bit under 2 1/4. Custom can be whatever.

1 3/4 - 2 1/4 is my standard, but like the other guys I have done all different spacing.

52mm Nut and 62mm Saddle (pretty standard for classical)...52mm nut equals 2.something in inches...62mm saddle equals 2 and 3/8+something in inches.

1 11/16" and 2 1/8 because I didn't know any better. The books I'm using gave that measurement and it is what I have on my Yairi, that I've played for 34 years, so I'm used to it.

Welp, I can't participate in your poll. I build classicals with their characteristically wide nuts (I prefer 54mm, which allows for a 9mm string spacing), and I've built only one steel string so far, which I built for myself because I couldn't find one out there with a wide enough nut. This one has a 1-15/16" wide nut. String spacing at the saddle is 2-1/4". I find it to be quite comfortable.

Best,

Michael
