For those of you who french polish, I would be interested in learning how you lay down the shellac on the sides around the neck heel. Invariably, I have problems in this area. I wipe on the polish across the grain of the sides alongside the heel, and end up having to sand it down to get the vertical streaks out. Is there a better way?

I FP ny necks seperate from the body, but then again I build steel strings. If I remember correctly you build classical almost exclusivly. If attached the neck heal will always be a problem area due to the sharp corner formes by the heal and body. I have done one with the neck attached and I padded as normal in circular motion but formed my munecia into a very small point while working around the heal. No two ways about it this is a very tough area.

This is always a tough area to get, however I've had good results in the past. I take an eraser (standard pink rectangular ones) and cut it to match the shape I need along the side/heel. Cover it with your linen and go for it. Use very little shellac, a light touch, and quicker circular motions. It takes patience, but it's possible to get very good results.

Good tip John, I do similar but with a piece of hard felt (carpet underlay), I'll try the eraser (rubber over here!)
