I would find a piece of scrap try to scorch it in a similar way and wipe a little pottassium dichromate on it and see if that smooths it out.

(Be careful though... that stuff is highly toxic)

I like that much better than pigment on mahogany.

You could take a propane torch and scorch the rest of the mahagony... Maybe not, since it's all boxed up now, but hey it's a thought.

I agree with crazyman- get a temp control, only spend some more and get a
variac. Much more accurate, efficient and elegant way to control heat, rpm,
etc.

    I can send you a nice set of ebonized Mahogany. I have cooked a few sets and they balance out nicely once you stain and fill them.
      Next time ad a dash of white peper LOL.. 400 degrees for a minute or 2 isn't a big deal actually , but put the blanket on the top. Best place for it. You can control heat better that way.
    Keep a spray bottle handy and NEVER WALK AWAY FROM A BENDING MACHINE THAT IS TURNED ON !!!!

Potassium Dichromate will darken mahogany. I am not exactly sure of the chemical process, but as I recall it reacts with the tannin in the wood.

It is a really great look on Mahogany though, very warm and dark.

I'm with brock here. you could use some spray oven cleaner on a rag It will darken the mahogany as well. use vinager to nutralize the solution when happy with the color because it will contiue to darken very dark if left active. Wash was with naptha after. Normally I would not try this on a box that has the top in place, but you could shellac the top end grain and top surface to protect them.MichaelP38730.67

I dont't know???? I will check tonight but I think it does contain some.

I got some at a paint and finish store. I think you can find it pretty easily.

Terry, for what slim comfort this might give, your side looks fine from way down here in Texas.
I agree with CrazyManMichael that a stain is the way to go, and it looks like it won't take much of that to blend things out nicely.
