I recently refinished a guitar using dark mahogany water-based stain followed by Tru-Oil. After I had applied the Tru-Oil, I noticed lots of small, sort of star-shaped light spots, mostly in the end grain areas where the stain was absorbed the most. The finish was affected all the way through, the stain was lighter and the Tru-Oil hadn't adhered to these spots.

I applied a coat of Tru-Oil / dark antique wax mix, which made these spots somewhat less prominent and the surface more even, but obviously there's nothing I can do to fix the actual stain at this point.

Has anyone else had this happen? I'd like to know what caused it so I can avoid it next time.
