I'm willing to help out anyone that's in or near Baltimore, MD. Of course, there's quite a few in this area that are better luthiers than me , but I do have a bandsaw and thickness sander. bliss

I have only just begun picking through the various build threads; I have to say I am loving the non-traditional undertakings. This is going to be fun to watch!

Just looking for a clarification.

As mentioned, I have finished two guitars, and have a third underway. I was told this would disqualify me from the challenge, in which i'd like to participate, but I note at least one other entrant seems to be in a similar situation...

Still can't play?

Yes start your build. As you can see Casey is halfway done with his one week build. Two days in and he is farther than I'll be in a month!

Are we allowed to have any inlay work done by someone else, or does literally "all" work on the guitar need to be done by only the builder? In my case I'm interested in having a little inlay work done on the headstock for my build.

Thanks,

Brad

Do it yourself and it's a non-issue :) Lots of fun, and good learning experience for the future.

Assuming you don't have a router setup yet, you can avoid it if the headplate is all you're inlaying. Do your pockets by temporarily gluing the pieces onto the headplate, and then sawing around them with a fine jeweler's saw blade, cutting through the headplate entirely. Then glue the pieces in, optionally with a backing veneer (looks nice from the side of the headstock anyway), and finally glue it onto the neck. Oh, and of course you'll have to drill a hole to thread the sawblade through, before you stick the pieces in place (so the piece can cover most of the hole, leaving just enough to fit the blade through).

Harvey Leach has been doing some awesome inlay work in this thread on AGF, using that style http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=263021

So are we going to have a "Ryder Cup" portion of the competition? Canadians, Americans, UK, Ozzies....or what that be an unfair advantage to the Canadians ;)

Rule # 5 .... Finish is huge part of the build .... A inlayed name , not so much .

Finishing isn't too bad frank. With a few YouTube videos and some articles you can get a very nice finish.

Wud, maybe in the poll thread at the end contestants should include information pertaining to if they had any work outsourced. Just to give everyone a fair shot. For instance If someone ordered pre bent sides, or had inlays done by a pro that could make a difference in voting. Everyone in the contest are new at this and with all the money and hard work going into the instruments I can understand if someone wants a nice heastock inlay but doesnt want to risk messing up all of the hard work they have put into the instrument. I personally would be fine with them ordering an inlay or having some help with it, BUT that would effect how I voted. So I think for small things like that its fine but it should be disclosed in the final poll thread so that the voters can make an educated vote without having to read through everyones individual build threads. Just a thought.

I would say something large like finish shouldnt be outsourced, If it was I know i wouldt vote for them, ya know. Just leave it up to the builders to decide so you dont get bombarded with questions of if this is acceptable or that is acceptable. Use rule #9. Decide for yourselves just disclose it in the poll thread with your videos and pictures.

Slow and steady wins the race... Err, um, this isn't a race, we have until October! The Tapatalk app makes it very easy to post pics of the progress on your builds. Download that joker and show us whatcha got going on! I will also be posting pics of some of the jigs I use and I'll be happy to answer questions about them.
