I can't get the finishing video to play on my PC. What software do I need?

I don't know Tim. Anyone else having any trouble getting the DVD to play on a PC? Have you tried it in a regular DVD player as well?

I have no problem playing through Windows Media Player. For those of you having trouble, you might want to check online for an update to your media player.

I don't think Windows Media Player automatically includes the DVD codec... If you can play DVD's in WMP, it usually indicates that you have some other DVD software loaded up, too. (At least this used to be the case).

Also, this may or may not seem obvious to most... Make sure you've actually got a dvd drive and not just a CD or CDRW drive.

Jon,
First off, the video clips are not DVD format. They're in both Windows
Media Player and Quicktime formats.

Robbie,
you might mention to your publisher that the Quicktime clips come up as
simply lines of code on a Mac. I'm running the latest version of
Quicktime, so I'm fairly certain it's a problem with the files. They probably
work with Quicktime for the PC, but not the Mac. The WMP files work just
fine on the Mac. Who'da thunk?

Tim,
are you talking about the actual DVD, or the video clips at the publisher's
site?

Ahh, sorry, I misunderstood. I thought he was talking about the actual DVD disc.

Craig:
I put the disc in my PC's DVD drive and Windows Media Player starts but it will not recognize the disc. I have played other DVDs without any problems.

Steve:
No I did not try that yet. I will check your PM.

You need to download the clip (control-click and choose "download linked
file") and rename the file:
For example "frenchpolish2.mp4.txt" should become "frenchpolish2.mp4", it
will then open in QT. Because the Mac system thinks it's a text file Safari (or
other browsers) will display the code and not open the QT plugin. I do not
know for Windows users but I suspect a similar issue happened. Robbie's
publisher needs to rename the linked files on the server.

To get a DVD to play in WMP you do need to install a codec. But if Tim says it works for other DVD's, then he probably already has a codec, but probably one that is not compatible with the DVD. I just downloaded a new codec for WMP about 2 weeks ago. I'll try that with this DVD this afternoon and let you know if it works. Then I'll give you the name of the codec to install. Tim, does it play on your home DVD player? Just wondering.

Tim,
I tested the DVD today, and it works on my computer no problem. I'm using Windows Media Player 9.00 and I bought the following codec for DVD and CD from intervideo, you can get it Here

Here is what my publisher has to say about issue:

The DVD plays fine in my Windows machine in Windows Media Player version 9.00.00.3250 running Windows XP home addition. I'm thinking this is some kind of an upgrade glitch or something for this one customer. As far as the sample clips go, I'll still have to look into those, thankfully most people viewing them are on Windows machines, but it's funny they have problems on the Mac since they were created on a Mac! I'll keep you posted on that one.

I have never had a complaint about the clips from a MAC user. We will have to track this one down.
