I don't guess this comes as a surprise to anyone but me, but carving the
heel of the neck was great fun. This is my first neck, made it out of
honduran mahogany with a stacked heel block.

The hardest part was cutting the initial curve. I started with trying to use
a coping saw, but it and I do not get along as it turns out. So, I ended up
cutting out several rectangular sections and then using a rasp and a
sanding drum in my drill press to smooth out the curve. I cut primary
facets with my ryobi and then went to town with a sharp 1" chisel.

I guess after about 30 minutes or so, I looked down and a heel had
popped out of the former block of mahogany. Apparently there's a guitar
hidden in that chunk of wood after all.

Hi Jay, I agree it is fun to shape necks.

now you need to get your hands on a good sharp scraper and smooth out that heel.

prepare for euphoria!

Way to go Jay. I didn't see the word bandsaw in your comment. If the side of your neck blank is flush, a bandsaw will follow that curve nicely. Congratulations on your ecstasy!

When people ask me how I make the neck, I tell them that I just cut away all the wood that doesn't look like a guitar neck.

Hi Jay,
I understand exactly how you feel ! It's a great buzz to carve out that area with a really nice sharp chisel. Taking off nice long even shavings.
Better than sex !!!!

Regards KiwiCraig
