Thanks Pat, tried that too from the luthier supplies list Sylvan Wells put out.
Got a "unvalid/unknown email address" reply.

Laurent-

Try John Greven's TorTis webpage. I'm not sure if this is what you are after but it's the only thing I know of like this. I'm not sure if he sells in sheet form or not. Give him a call, he is usually busy but is very nice if you can get ahold of him. His number is (503) 233-8525 and his email is grevenguitars@msn.com.

Good Luck-

Yeah, I like Tortis very much and use it regularly, but I'm looking for
celluloid sheets. Like '50 or '60 style with the yellow, red and black thing.
Any idea?

Yes, the LMI sheets are not real celluloid. At least the good looking ones
(non pastrami looking…). The Tor-tis looking sheets are transparent sheets
with a print on one side, a bit like the cheezy guards Martin uses, but better
looking.

Laurent

I seem to remember (and I could be wrong about this) that celluloid had been clasified as hazadous (flammable) for transport and storage, so I don't know if this has naything to do with why you are having trouble finding some.

Yes, Stewmac stopped supplying ivorid because of hazardous materials shipping restrictions, and panic spread in the mandolin world! However, I believe Martin, Grizzly and Saga still have it, as well as this guy (who I have only bought mando tailpieces from, but he started selling the stuff after Stewmac stopped and he has LOTS!):

Cellouid nitrate materials

The Tor-tis looking sheets are transparent sheets with a print on one side

Careful with the terminology and names.

Tor-Tis is a name brand for a product that is cast with the color within it, all handmade. John Greven came up with the process, and all Tor-tis pickguard and sheets are made by Turtleworks. Excellent pickguards! And to add confusion, there are now Tor-Tis picks which are made from a natural protein product, which is a whole other things again(basically, it is cultured tortoise shell). Excellent picks, BTW...

The stuff you talk of with the print is a whole 'nuther deal... Ugh...

Careful with the terminology and names.

I'm talking about the pickguard sheets LMI sells, which look a bit like Tor-
tis, but ARE NOT Tor-tis (I know they sell Tor-tis sheets as well…). Those
NON-TORTIS are transparent sheets with a print on the underside. They look
OK, not great, and do not have the depth or detail of Tor-tis PG material. I
hope I'm being clear enough…
That being said I'm still looking for *real* old-fashioned, dangerous and
flamable celluloid.

Argh! You're doing it again!

What you're talking about are the plastic tortoise sheets, not the Tor-tis(or Tortis) sheets. Note the spelling. One or two letters, but a big difference that can lead to much confusion.Mario38755.5015162037

Mario, I know what I am talking about, you're the one who doesn't
understand me. Perhaps my French accent?…

Here is the LMI pickguard Tortis imitation sheet:

As you can see it looks a bit like Tortis (which is a tortoise imitation…)
although it is not Tortis, but a clear plastic material with a print on the
underside. Looks better than what Martin puts on the GE series -at least
the LMI sheet does not show the matrix pixelated pattern-, but no
comparison with *real* Tortis material, see below.

Here is some real Tortis (or Tor-tis):

This is Deep River Vintage celluloid "tortoise":

This is what I want to avoid with celluloid sheets (the pastrami look):

Arnt, thanks much for the website.
They seems to be vending only binding strips, and not the kind of celluloid
I'm looking for.

<shaking head...>

Laurent, I know what you're saying, and I know what you're talking of, I am just trying to get you to use the proper phargling terms.

The stuff you keep refering to is plastic imitation tortoise. There is only one product named Tor-Tis™(and none are called "Tortis", which isn't a word). Tor-Tis is available in many, many variations, even custom ones.

So, please, there's Tor-Tis, and there tortoise colored/patterned plastic. And there's tortoise colored/patterned celluloid. Quit saying there's plastic
tortis. Let's nip this one in the bud before it becomes the next kerfings fiasco.

There are many different facial tissues, but only one is Kleenex. Same here.

Have you called GW Muscial? They may have what you're looking for.

Laurent

The PGSLT at LMI maybe celluloid, the only reason I say this is that they won't Air Freight this one, which means it is hazadous for shipping, whereas the others they will.

Might be worth calling and asking, that is of course if it is the right colour etc.

????????
I never refered to plastic Tortis!!!! I merely mentionned one product LMI
sells, which in my mind is meant to emulate the pattern found in the '50
Tortis pickguards… Misunderstandings…
I'm downloading GW catalog, thanks for the tip.

Yes it is celluloid, I've ordered it before. But I do not like the pattern and it's
a little thin.

I bet if you talk to John Greven he can get you the look your after. His pickgaurds are expensive in comparision, but the quality is high it's worth it, at least for me.
It's not celluloid, but it's great material. Oh, it also won't shrink like celluloid.
