I decided to get creative as I gave it 24 "fret" access to extend the fingerboard a bit with a section that mimics the tail , I'll stain it darker to match the ebony later .

5 coats of deep vintage amber stain with just a touch of cherry , each coat back sanded back down clean with 220 grit.
Scalloped and stained the extension .. I'm pleased .. the pic is with an alcohol wipe to give an idea of what the finish will look like

I thought I'd post a comment on how it all turned out . While I've built several basses with the same pickups / electronics and neck through design , this one REALLY has a huge sound . The semi-hollow format and lacewood back I believe may be adding to the fullness . I actually decided to get a better Bass rig to fully realize it's potential .

Ended up with A Gallien -Krueger MB800 Fusion (3 x12 AX& preamp 800w class D power) with a Bergantino HD212

Next up , an all flame maple commission with Vic Wooten EMG set , my first flame maple fretboard .. I'll be using a lacewood body with 3/8" maple top to warm up the tone. The client is really into the slap and pop thing , so bright is OK , but a bass should have some depth too. it will be similar to Vic's Fodera Monarch in silhouette
