Hi Guys. I haven't had anything worth really posting until this one- is there any way to get the image better? This small size upload is killing it! It's actually over 5 inches wide..

store it on another site and you can get it to load here at at least 800x600

I use irfanview to manipulate the pics

I've only ever uploaded one pic to the OLF site so I can't help there if there's a better way to do that.

That has strong resemblance to Sitting Bull, who has always been a personal favorite of mine. But he is usually pictured a little more clean-shaven.

When all else fails, clean the shop.

Craig: use IrfanView, drop the DPI to around 72 (you don't need more than that for web use. Printing, yes, web, no), and have quality setting on JPG be good, but not maximum (I use the batch processing tools in IrfanView for this, or Photoshop Elements inidividual commands).

That's a really nice piece of work!

Craig, right clicking on the picture shows me (under properties) that it is only 55k the size limit for uploading to the forum is now 150k. so you can go bigger with no problem.

Craig, I think that's my favorite piece I've seen of yours. Amazing!!!
One thing I did for uploading is make a folder whereever your server is. I call mine "extraImages" Then when I want to view something bigger I upload it to that folder and use the tree w/o arrow (third button from the right) to view it here. I just enter my web address followed by /extraImages/imagename.jpg and there it is.

I am pretty pleased with it.
It's ivory, recon stones, pearl, blah blah, ebony.. a few other woods, mostly pearls though.

I spent more time stipling and engraving than on some others. About 6 hours. The goal was to get the effect of age going, I guess it looks more un-shaven!

I can always look at it again. It's not finished over yet.

The stipling works for me - my first reaction was that it was to give character lines. That's a beautiful piece of work.    Given it's size what is it being inlayed into?

I am supressing my urge to pepper you with questions -- but if you'll allow me one -- how long does it take you to do a piece like that from drawing, cutting, inlaying and graving?

This one took about an hour and a half sketching and drawing, about an hour researching/looking at other inlayer's ideas (AKA Grit's site... ) as well as finding an Indian worth rendering, then about 3 hours laying up and deciding on materials, I estimate about 10-12 hours cutting, but most likely more, an hour and a quarter to scribe/route (that was actually the easy part this time around- it's on a flat walnut block soley for display purposes- it's purely artistic), and then six hours engraving time or so.
Total estimate: 25 hours. It felt more like thirty though...
Don I look forward to talking with you again, I am getting very busy though. Better get things going!

Actually I was wanting to post these thoughts the whole time. I never had the desire or the feeling that I could even do a human face until I did Bill for you what- Two and a half, three years ago now? Something like that.. Anyway- I have you to thank for making me do that one, and of course John to thank for being the first professional luthier to use me pretty much at all! It gave me the confidence to try the others. Of course I have Grit and Larry R. to thank for being the inspirations for my base style, but they never made me do any inlays.

Okay, I hear a new series coming on. If you want Craig, I'll try to find a picture of this guy. Right before the Trail of Tears passed through there was a chief up on the bayou, he was famous. His name: Chief Bullfrog, and that's no joke.

I met a man who was of Indian descent here in town. His name was Bluford West McCann. His dad stepped outside the morning he was born and saw: A blue Ford going West. Again, that's no joke, that's how he got his name.
