Hi. I was repairing the Finish on a 2005 martin D28 and did not realize that headstock name was a decal and not inlayed so I mess up some of the name before I realized how it was put. Does anybody have any ideas to get another one. I am missing the 1 and a 3 in the est 1833 part of the decal. Help

From what I've read, Martin provides the decals only to authorized Martin repairers. You might email John Hall, one of our sponsors, for more expert advice.

are the waterslide Martin headstock decals you see on ebay a no no a unethical use of a counterfeit product, just curious.. thanks..G.

Fender obliges restorations. So send pics of the guitar and serial # with the sad story to Martin and with luck Chris might oblige you.

Yes they are counterfeit and unethical. Just the same as those Gibson headstock overlays that are abundant there.

I have not looked in my post for a while and am surprised of the response in regard to my headstock decal problem. After trying a very large Midwest martin dealer about getting a replacement decal they told me to go online and find it,I contacted two martin repair shop close to where I live they did not respond or said they could not get it,so I sent an email to martin they said to go to a martin repair shop. I understand that somebody might put this on there kit guitar but I am just trying to restore this guitar back to original for my customer. It is kind of crazy the neck is off the guitar I could ship it to have this put on, I have serial number and photos. But as of now I probably will go with the water slide decal. Lee

I suggest you go with the third-party decal, and let those other folks continue debating whether it is somehow "unethical" to use it.

Jeez, if it truly looks right, is not misrepresented, and it is used appropriately on the correct product, what's the harm?

Hi. I would like to thank Frank Ford for tip about using deleted Hyde glue to apply headstock decal it worked great I have lacquer going over it already. The link for the piano decal was impressive . Thanks again. Lee

When I created my account it required I use my real name. The board admin explained on the enrollment they wanted mature comments and contributions. I have seen two examples why this is a good idea today while looking at threads pertaining to waterslides. Perhaps they should have made this a retroactive requirement for all accounts....

The snarky part of me would like to suggest that if you don't know how Martin put their name on a particular guitar (and there are a number of ways), then you should probably not be messing with the finish at all. Water slide decals were used for many decades, and they have a look that is hard to miss, even under finish. They do not look like inlays.

There is no work in all of lutherie more difficult or maddening than finish touch-up. This stuff really separates the pros from the amateurs.

The logo on a 2005 D-28 is the gold foil type. I'm pretty sure it's not a water slide decal either.

Maybe the snarky part of you should be kept to yourself I don't see where your response was any help to me or anyone else. I tied going through the usual methods to get a decal which I got the run around. And for what it is worth the Finnish so melted that the decal was messed up beyond use anyway. It now have a water slide decal and I will probably keep it for myself even though I do build better guitars then a D28 Martin.

Well next time I'm at Camp Perry I'd like to see them
