Can anyone tell me if the carbon fiber material they make archery arrows with is the same strength as material typically sold at Stew mac etc.. If it is, do you think the round shape if seated in a core box routed channel covered with a wood fillet would be good.

I am trying to straiten a cheap mandolin neck with alot of upbow, remove the finger board, plane out bow, and rout and epoxy CF etc.. needless to say no truss rod in it.

I have a cheap source of old arrows locally.

thanks

rasby

Well, carbon fiber in any form is pretty strong.
I'd say using an old arrow for a truss rod is pretty good recycling.
Let us know how it turns out.

the rods used in guitar making are solid; i'm assuming the arrows are hollow, with very thin walls. strong enough for an arrow, but......

Buying carbon bar of an appropriate size is tricky in the UK but I have bought some square bars, one with a 6mm OD and a 4mm ID, the second with a 4mm OD and a 2.5 mm ID. The smaller rod is a nice fit inside the larger one and my intention was to glue the two together to make a nice strong truss rod. What would be the best glue to bond the two together? Can I use thin CA and wick it down or do I need to use an epoxy glue and hope I don't scrape it all off when I slide it in?

I would think either will work. CA isn't very shock resistant, but that shouldn't be a problem buried in the neck. Epoxy is relatively stable, although it might creep under high heat - but again shouldn't be a problem.

I am pretty interested to see how this works for you. I like the idea of re-purposing broken stuff in unusual ways.

I have used Gorilla glue to put in several and it seems to work well . The one thing I found that helps is to lightly sand the carbon ruffing it a bit and it sticks better

If anyone is looking for inexpensive carbon fiber, in the past, walmart locally as well as the box sporting goods stores sell solid cf arrows for children. Have cut into them, and they are completely solid. Great price and no shipping.

Make sure there's no rattle before putting the fingerboard back on
