This looks like Narra. Does it have very distinct pleasant aroma when you resaw it? I had a floor plank I found on the street once and resawn it for fun. It smelled really nice and it looks almost exactly like this wood. It's very hard and heavy. In Chinese I think it's called "purple altar" or 紫檀

Hello Tai, thanx for your input, but I know narra, and this is not narra. This wood is really bright, close to white, and more or less doesnt smell at all....

Purple Altar sounds cool, and the signs behind are very nice....what do they mean?

I don't know, I always thought Narra was really bright but honestly do not know what this stuff is. Please see this picture.

It is exactly the same as that wood you just resawn, in fact the same texture. At first I dismissed this floor board as some light lauan (or Philippine Mahogany) but I resawn this just for kicks, and discovered how heavy the aroma was. The wood is very light, and hard/dense. Not sure if your wood has any smell but you can ONLY smell it if you cut or sand it, you will not smell anything just by smelling the wood... the smell goes away quickly after cutting. The only way I can describe the smell is that of perfume...

Please note the guitar in the picture is NOT the floorboard I speak of! That wood smells far worse than this floor board and it always gave me serious allergic reaction.

glancing thru this thread, i find it amusing that the wood merchants have managed to convince, and market it thusly to consumers that "heartwood" (in rosewood and ebony in particular)is some sort of special asset...to me it looks terrible and needs to be excised with a hatchet post haste. i understand that exotic wood is scarce but i'd rather not use it if i had to resort to garish '90s style "bowling shirt" striped backs on a guitar. just dye some walnut or whatever

Hello nyazzip,

thank you for your comment. can it be that your are confusing "heartwood" with "sapwood"?

cheers, alex

Anybody else notice the creepy face in the bocote? Kind of looks like V for Vendetta, except more slender and alien like.

Dang!
That's a lot of great looking pieces.
I'm about ready to try re-sawing some electric tops.
I've got some Maple and Redwood billets.
My 14" saw should do about an 8" cut and I'll do some practice runs on scraps.
Thanks for the great pictures,
Dan

It could be limba... it can be extremely variable in density. I have some that is under 2.0 lb/board foot (385 kg/m^3), some that is 4 lb/board foot (770 kg/m^3), and some almost everywhere in between.

Here some new stuff:

First, for Tops I will be resawing a couple of these, quite unusual, but I want to try them:
In real they are not so greenish coloured as on the pictures...

Some real figured Crab Apple, nice contarst in colour and nice flame figured. The contarst will get stronger when exposed to UV-light and will not fade away like so often....

And now...the desaster, what a shame...really bad luck....I had this board of figured Horse-Chestnut with nice colouration in it. When thicknessing down the boards to the required thickness for resawing this happend...

First it looked for me like a normal knot, so I was putting the board through the thickness planer...but, it was not a normal know, which I could hear quite well during thicknessing.... gaah [headinwall] :o duh

And yes, of course, my really expensive HM-Steel / Carbid Steel planing knives had just been resharpend before christmas....yeah....

A ................... NAIL..........................

Nice...now I can change the knives again, resharpen....and the board is not big enough anymore for my Jumbo shape, luckily it still works for a classical (Flamenco... [:Y:] ) sized guitar.

At least the two sets which i could yield out of the board are quite nice and interesting.

Taptone from Horse-Chestnut ???? Anybody...???? ...Wet Cardborad comes quite close ;)

Ouch! Your blades must have a nasty looking profile now. What kind of wood are the tops, Alex?

That top wood is beautiful... is it cedar?

And your horsechestnut experience reminds me of when I sold my last bandsaw... a potential buyer brought a 12" wide and thick piece of live edge cherry from a tree he cut down himself which he wanted to run through the saw in order to make sure it could resaw really wide boards. About half way through we heard a 'thunk' and the board jumped a little. On the inside near the middle was a big nail like yours, probably nailed into the tree before he was born and completely surrounded by heartwood. Fortunately it did not damage or even seem to dull the carbide blade that was on the saw. It just goes to show that you never know what you are going to find when you start to cut into a board.

Larch, AKA tamarak, has been used often enough. Even Martin made a run of D-28s in the mid 80s with larch tops. A good bit heavier than spruce, the guitars are not known to be as responsive and loud as their spruce-topped counterparts were/are. Pretty wood, though!

Excellent firewood but you -must- let it dry out completely, otherwise the natural turpentine can cause it to burn so hot that it can(and often does) cause a house fire...
